About the Job

General Summary of Position
Provides a high standard of general secretarial and administrative support to the Pre-Anesthesia Testing (PAT) department and all members of the patient's healthcare team. Responsible for ensuring that all necessary medical and insurance information is obtained and all preoperative requirements are completed and readily available in the electronic health record as directed per departmental standards. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Medical Group Anesthesia's (MMGA) philosophy policies procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Receives incoming and initiated outgoing telephone calls to collaborate with physician offices patients and external providers to facilitate timely receipt of medically necessary documents required pre-anesthesia testing and insurance information per departmental standards.
  • Transfers patient medical records from electronic fax to corresponding patient electronic medical records.
  • Retrieves insurance information from a variety of online or phone resources and accurately transfer to designated repository.
  • Proactively communicates with team members when required documents or information are unable to be obtained or are inconsistent with prior knowledge of the patient to avoid delays in the surgical process and receipt of services.
  • Tracks patient progress through pre- and post-operative benchmarks and assists in appointment scheduling as necessary.
  • Continually seeks to identify and seize opportunities to tap talents or to increase personal knowledge and skills needed for the position through continuing education programs and/or networking.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Demonstrates professional conduct and ethical standards practice.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required and
  • Associate's degree preferred or
  • Bachelor's degree preferred

Experience

  • Prior work experience not required required and
  • Less than 1 year 6 months unit secretary registration medical records or related clinical healthcare experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • No special certification registration or licensure required

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to read and write in English perform arithmetic calculations and communicate with patients their families/caregivers and professionals effectively.
  • Incumbents in positions must be detail-oriented and able to multitask and prioritize work to facilitate efficient and timely care planning and coordination of care.
  • Ability to work within a variety of software applications including MS Office Suite electronic medical record systems.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining service-oriented courteous interactions with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in various formats (e.g. written verbal diagram etc.).

This position has a hiring range of

USD $18.70 - USD $32.72 /Hr.
