General Summary of Position
The Inpatient Pharmacy at MedStar Washington Hospital is hiring a Pharmacy Technician III.

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician III prepares and fills routine orders for prescribed medications; restocks automated dispensing machines; repackages medications; compounds both sterile and non-sterile medications and performs designated advanced level technical functions to facilitate pharmacy operations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Consistently fulfills all the duties and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician II with progression.
• Performs higher level duties as needed by the department including but not limited to: controlled substance monitoring, process improvement and procedure development, procurement, discrepancy resolution, report generation, and inventory management.
• Training of new associates within the department is required.
• Consistently provides cross coverage for specialty pharmacy technician roles participating in multi-functional pharmacy technician duties.
• Preparation: Safely and accurately prepares all medications in the most ready to administer form (including hazardous medications and sterile products) using proper techniques, calculations and appropriate precautions. Labels and packages medications according to hospital policy, applicable laws, and regulations and standards. 
• Ensures that medications are properly and safely stored throughout the hospital. Stores medications under conditions necessary to ensure stability. Secures medications in accordance with the hospital's policy law and regulation.
• Stores controlled substances in such a manner to prevent diversion in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations. Accounts for all unused expired or returned medications according to law. Utilizes automation where applicable.
• Transports medication to patient care units placing in the designated delivery locations within established departmental standards for turnaround times.
• IV Compounding: performs IV preparation under sterile technique, packages medication for distribution and maintains daily production logs.
• Per site needs Tech III may be cross trained to perform medication history and/or hazardous prep tech limited duties and responsibilities.
• Oher duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

• High School Diploma or GED required 
• Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program required 
• AA/BS or some college credits in Natural or Physical sciences and/or Business Management preferred
• One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience

Experience

• 3-4 years Hospital Pharmacy Technician experience required 
• 1-2 years IV Admixture and Pharmacy Automation Experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications

• PHRMTECH-R - Registered Pharmacy Technician through the DC Board of Pharmacy required upon hire
• CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) National Pharmacy Technician Certification through Board of Pharmacy approved program required upon hire
