General Summary of Position

 

At MedStar Health, the Registered Nurse (RN) in the Ambulatory Infusion Center provides compassionate, patient-centered nursing care to individuals receiving outpatient infusion therapies. This role is responsible for administering medications, biologics, blood products, and supportive treatments in accordance with MedStar Health's clinical standards and commitment to safety and excellence. The RN ensures patient comfort, monitors treatment responses, and delivers care that supports optimal clinical outcomes. In alignment with MedStar Health's collaborative care model, the RN works closely with physicians, pharmacists, and members of the interdisciplinary team to provide high-quality, coordinated care and an exceptional patient experience.

 

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Provide direct nursing care to patients undergoing infusion therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, IV hydration, biologics, and anti-infectives.

  • Assess, monitor, and evaluate patient conditions before, during, and after infusion treatments, intervening promptly as needed.

  • Safely initiate and maintain peripheral and central venous access, following all infection prevention and safety protocols.

  • Administer medications and infusions in accordance with provider orders, evidence-based guidelines, and organizational policies.

  • Educate patients and families on treatment plans, potential side effects, self-care instructions, and follow-up needs.

  • Accurately document assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses in the electronic medical record.

  • Collaborate with providers, pharmacists, and clinical teams to coordinate care, address concerns, and ensure continuity.

  • Monitor infusion equipment, troubleshoot issues, and maintain preparedness for emergency situations.

  • Support quality improvement initiatives, patient safety efforts, and compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of infusion therapy best practices, medications, and safety requirements.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • Associate's degree in Nursing required
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred
  • If prepared at the associate degree in nursing level required to enroll in a BSN program within 12 months of hire date and completion within 4 years of hire date.

Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience; infusion, oncology, or ambulatory care experience required.

  • Strong IV insertion skills and experience with central line management.

  • Excellent clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to work independently in a fast-paced outpatient setting.

 

 

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
  • C-EFM - Electronic Fetal Monitoring from the National Certification Corporation (NCC) is required for Perinatal nurses (labor and delivery antepartum antenatal testing) within 12 months from date of hire. New graduate nurses or new to specialty nurses (labor and delivery antepartum antenatal testing) will have 15 months from date of hire to obtain the EFM certification.

USD $40.17 - USD $65.31 /Hr.
