About the Job

General Summary of Position
Performs a variety of functions to assist the professional staff in the department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Under direct supervision of an Occupational Therapist (OT) Physical Therapist (PT) or Speech Pathologist (SLP) aids patients with therapeutic exercises and/or activities. Upon successful completion of departmental competencies may independently perform multiple functions that are not related to a patient's plan of care e.g. transportation of patients and various program service functions such as gym set up to prepare for patient treatment supplies inventory etc. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy policies procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Under direct supervision aids patients in practicing functional exercises and activities as directed by Occupational Therapists (OT's) Physical Therapists (PT's) and Speech Pathologists (SLP's). Functional activities may include but are not limited to: exercises gait/stair/transfer practice utilizing pulleys weights tilt-table and other appropriate equipment.
  • Under direct supervision checks vital signs including blood pressure pulse respiratory rate and oxygen saturation levels during patient activities as directed.
  • Under direct supervision assists PT with patients receiving wound care treatment. This includes preparation and clean-up applying dressings and patient transfers in and out of whirlpool.
  • Under direct supervision directs patients in the care and use crutches walkers and other ambulatory devices such as slings braces orthotics etc.
  • Assists OT with Activities of Daily Living treatment utilizing appropriate adaptive equipment as directed.
  • Assist in the provision of bedside treatments; assists OT/PT/SLP in positioning handling and stabilizing patients.
  • Organizes maintains and cleans treatment areas and equipment. Ensures all forms are stocked.
  • Transports patients to and from the department of PM&R assists in the preparation of patients for transport and patient transfers; transports equipment needed to bedside as requested by OT/PT/SLP
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and orders equipment according to par levels. Maintains all equipment and refrigerator logs.
  • Promotes and abides by all C2C standards.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Bachelor's degree in a medical science or exercise science preferred
    • Must complete competencies in a variety of skills when hired and on an annual basis thereafter.
    Experience
    • Prior work experience not required
    • Basic knowledge of exercise programs some exposure and experience dealing with a variety of patients preferred
    Licenses and Certifications
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patient the medical and professional staff and the public.
    • Ability to read understand and respond to detailed oral and written English language instructions.
    • Ability to communicate clearly.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of relevant therapy practices.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
    • Must have the ability to learn and integrate protocols and precautions related to patient treatments.

    This position has a hiring range of

    USD $18.70 - USD $32.72 /Hr.
