General Summary of Position
MedStar Ambulatory Services is committed to providing world-class compassionate care to every patient every time at every touch point. All associates are accountable for their role in meeting patient experience standards. Performs a variety of technical duties to assist with surgery.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Anticipates sequential needs of the surgeon during the operative procedure.
- Assists with case preparation following preference card guidelines.
- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems.
- Functions as surgical assistant during operative procedures performing specified activities under the direct supervision of the surgeon. May act as second assistant by providing exposure and holding retractors.
- Identifies and handles specimens appropriately.
- Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
- May function as a technical resource person for OR staff providing information relating to instruments and equipment.
- Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
- Performs indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Provides comfort and support for preoperative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.
- Responds to questions from patient families and significant others in a prompt courteous positive and knowledgeable manner and/or refers to appropriate personnel.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required and
- Bachelor's degree from a school of surgical technology or completion of hospital-based training. required
Experience
- Less than 1 year 6 months experience as a surgical technologist or graduation from a school of surgical technology program. required
- One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications
- CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Competency in case procedure preparation and completion in all services.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
This position has a hiring range of
USD $29.73 - USD $53.49 /Hr.
