General Summary of Position
The Senior Director of Nursing Research assumes a leadership role in setting the MedStar Health system nursing vision and strategy for research and scientific inquiry. The Senior Director provides expertise and operational leadership for nursing research evidence-based practice (EBP) and outcomes evaluation for key nursing programs. The Senior Director builds systemwide research capacity accelerates clinical nurse-led inquiry and research activities that support Magnet recognition and nursing excellence in alignment with system nursing strategic plan and priority goals. The System Director of Nursing Research fosters a systemwide culture of inquiry mentors clinical nurses in the conduct of research ensures compliance with related regulatory standards and integrates EBP into nursing practice to improve patient care outcomes. Collaborates with nursing academic-practice partners and other healthcare disciplines both internal and external to MedStar Health to enhance a spirit of scientific inquiry; role models and supports professional practice and lifelong learning and development.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and executes a nursing strategic plan for research and evidence-based practice (EBP) that aligns with MedStar Health system nursing priorities (clinical inquiry practice quality safety workforce care model innovation and digital transformation); guides nursing inquiry and dissemination of research; and seeks input from key stakeholders (e.g. Chief Nursing Officers Nursing leadership Team Magnet Coordinators and Institutional Review Board (IRB) leadership) to build effective partnerships.
- Promotes a culture of scholarly inquiry through user-friendly educational offerings mentoring and fellowship programs and consultancy services to clinical nurses across MedStar Health. Creates and implements nursing research and EBP governance structure that oversees research and EBP programs at the entity and system levels and for the prioritization and endorsement of related scholarly activities.
- Establishes research priorities based on current trends clinical priorities and organizational objectives. Identifies health care issues/phenomena within nursing worthy of investigation in collaboration with clinical nurses nurse leaders other researchers and health care professionals. Facilitates collaboration among nurses and other health care disciplines in the conduct of research activities.
- Mentors early career nurse scientists clinical nurses and others in the development and implementation of research and EBP projects including identification of research questions review of the literature development and review of proposals implementation and dissemination of findings. Develops and implements educational programs aimed to advance clinical nurses' involvement in nursing research and EBP activities and writing for publication.
- Develops and expands methods and resources for collecting analyzing and interpreting data and information needed to conduct research including library resources databases data collection institutional review of proposals statistical support software applications and information technology.
- Establishes partnerships with nursing academic institutions research organizations other healthcare systems and internal stakeholders (e.g. Magnet coordinators nurse leaders IRB) to promote collaborative research opportunities.
- Builds a pipeline for extramural and intramural funding for nursing research programs. Collaborates with research faculty from school of nursing partners on the conduct of research and submission of grant proposals for funding.
- Prepares and presents research findings to internal and external audiences. Disseminates knowledge through internal and external publications peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations (poster and podium).
- Collaborates with nursing leaders to assess the learning needs of nurses related to research. Mentors nursing leaders and clinical nurses to evaluate and integrate research evidence into practice including nursing standards of care standards of practice policies and procedures models of care quality improvement and staff development programs.
- Contributes expertise and mentorship in the development of nurse-led interdisciplinary research and scholarship. Serves as a Collaborative Governance liaison or chair/co-chair for System Nursing Research and EBP Council. Convene the nursing scientists from across the system as a council responsible for overseeing systemwide research activities and programs.
- Recognizes and rewards nurses' professional scholarship activities. Establishes and maintains effective relationships and working agreements with key research partners including staff and administration within Medstar Health IRBs academic institutions and other external research-based organizations.
- Ensures all research activities meet ethical standards human subject protections system policies and regulatory requirements including those for Magnet designation.
- Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
- Doctoral degree Doctor of Philosophy - research doctorate (PhD or EdD) in Nursing or relevant field required
Experience
- 5-7 years of progressively responsible job related experience that demonstrates a record as an effective leader educator and clinician with a record of research/evidence based practice scholarship including external presentations and publications required
- 1-2 years Academic experience preferred
- 1-2 years Leading Nursing Research Programs required
Licenses and Certifications
- RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure and Maryland required
- Certification in area of specialty within 1 Year required
- Certification in nursing administration by a nationally recognized nursing organization within 1 Year required
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Extensive understanding of nursing science a strong track record of a successful research program and the ability to foster a collaborative environment that drives excellence in nursing research.
- Possesses knowledge of research design; Strong analytical skills and experience with research methodologies; Working knowledge of statistical software.
- Demonstrated success in leading and managing large-scale research projects.
- Proven track record of successful grant acquisition and funding.
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations ethical standards Magnet recognition program and compliance requirements pertaining to research conduct.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage and motivate diverse teams and lead teams across multiple levels of the organization.
- Familiarity with health care documentation systems grant writing publishing and presenting.

USD $142,064.00 - USD $288,038.00 /Yr.
