General Summary of Position
As an AI Engineer in the MedStar Health AI Center of Excellence, will transform healthcare through innovative AI technology. Designs and builds the software that will enable AI to enhance patient care and streamline operations. This includes integrating internally developed and vendor machine learning algorithms and large language models. Working closely with data scientists, clinicians, researchers, and IT teams, builds intelligent solutions to address complex healthcare challenges while ensuring all products meet our stringent safety and efficacy standards. Technical expertise and creative problem-solving skills will help shape the future of healthcare technology, drive measurable improvements, and leave a lasting impact on patient care and operational excellence.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, and maintains scalable, secure, and high-performance software applications that drive real-world impact in healthcare while maintaining the highest standards of security and compliance.
  • Collaborates with data scientists, clinicians, researchers and engineers to develop and integrate AI-driven products that improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency
  • Develops AI models at scale, ensuring performance, accuracy, and integration with existing systems.
  • Develops APIs to make AI capabilities accessible across the organization.
  • Deploys, monitors, and fine-tunes ML and LLM models in production, leveraging best practices in MLOps and cloud computing.
  • Actively participates in code reviews and collaborative problem-solving with teammates to foster a culture of innovation and technical excellence.
  • Builds and maintains data pipelines ensuring data quality, integrity, reliability and compliance with healthcare standards.
  • Evaluates third-party AI solutions to identify those that complement internal capabilities and meet MedStar Health's strategic objectives, and collaborates with vendors and internal stakeholders to integrate these solutions.
  • Stays at the forefront of AI innovation, continuously learning and applying the latest advancements in AI/ML, software development, and regulatory compliance.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Participates in meetings and committees as required, representing the department, and contributing to decision-making processes.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree In Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or related field required

    Experience

    • 5-7 years Experience as an AI Engineer or in a similar role. required
    • Experience building production quality ML and AI systems required and
    • Experience in DevOps and real-time ML and LLM model deployment and evaluation. required and
    • Experience with RAG frameworks and Agentic workflows valuable preferred and
    • Full stack experience valuable preferred and
    • Direct experience applying AI in healthcare preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Sound understanding of patient privacy and data security requirements, with direct experience applying AI in healthcare being a plus
    • Superior written and presentation skills to effectively communicate complex AI concepts and solutions.
    • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and other common AI languages.
    • Basic knowledge of healthcare data standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR) and medical terminologies (e.g., SNOMED CT, ICD-10)
    • Experience building and deploying machine learning models in real-world settings
    • Ability to work cross-functionally with healthcare professionals and stakeholders to identify and address their needs
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a demanding, fast-paced work environment


    This position has a hiring range of $93,142 - $175,968
