General Summary of Position
The Healthcare Venture Analyst at the Business Innovation Lab at the MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2) supports strategic initiatives that drive healthcare transformation through partnerships, investments, and new venture creation. Works closely with senior team members to evaluate emerging health technologies, analyze new business models, and support a portfolio of internal ventures and external startups.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts market research and competitive landscape analysis focused on healthcare innovation areas such as digital health, care delivery models, diagnostics, population health, AI/ML in healthcare, and virtual care.
  • Supports the development of business cases and financial models for new venture opportunities, pilot programs, and strategic partnerships.
  • Collaborates with clinical, operational, and IT stakeholders to assess innovation fit and scalability within the health system.
  • Contributes to due diligence efforts for external startup investments, joint ventures, or licensing opportunities.
  • Supports performance management of pilot and venture portfolios by maintaining KPIs, tracking ROI and clinical impact, and creating visual reporting tools to guide strategic decisions. Helps organize and prepare materials for internal stakeholders, including investment committees, strategy reviews, and innovation leadership.
  • Stays current on healthcare innovation trends, policy/regulatory changes, venture funding patterns, and emerging startups.
  • Supports cross-functional teams and external collaborators to advance commercialization and integration of innovation.
  • Analyzes and synthesizes internal and external data (e.g., clinical, operational, financial, and innovation-related) to inform venture decision-making and identify trends, opportunities, and performance gaps.
  • Builds dashboards, reports, and visualizations to communicate key metrics and insights to clinical, operational, and executive stakeholders.
  • Supports the creation of polished presentation materials (e.g., pitch decks, investment memos, board updates) for both internal and external audiences, translating complex findings into compelling, digestible formats.
  • Estimates the resources needed to achieve program goals; drafts and submits budget proposals and recommends subsequent budget changes where necessary. Determines and assesses need for additional staff, consultants, and/or vendors and makes the appropriate business case, as necessary.
  • Maintains awareness of leading-edge trends in healthcare innovation and technology and emerging early-stage companies, products, or services from multiple sources to understand potential opportunities for keeping MedStar on the cutting edge of applied innovation and technology, and communicates relevant information to leadership and associates.
  • Represents MI2 via speaking engagements at internal and external events and markets MI2 programs and services to internal and external stakeholders and strategic collaborators, focusing on the promotion of MedStar as a high innovation organization.
  • Identifies, recommends and supports other opportunities for the Business Innovation Lab to help MedStar transform its outcomes within priority focus areas; sources internally developed ideas, products or services that can contribute to the Business Innovation Lab mission.
  • Leads and supports diverse aspects of driving an internal innovation culture, from helping identify fitting focus areas/partners, to shaping/executing outreach, to operating related logistics with participants in formal programs, to accelerating/measuring outcomes.
  • Leads or contributes to the development of internal talent pipelines, including the administrative residency program, internships, and analyst development. Promotes professional growth and skills development across the Business Innovation Lab.
  • Leads and contributes to a diverse portfolio of initiatives aligned with MI2's mission, with flexibility to focus on administrative leadership, operational implementation, or intellectual property development based on strategic priorities and team composition.
  • Maintains an open network with peers and other leaders in healthcare organizations and investment funding sources.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree In Business, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Finance, Engineering, or related field required
    • Master's degree preferred
    • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

    Experience

    • 1-2 years In healthcare consulting, corporate strategy, venture capital, innovation, or hospital operations required
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Familiarity with U.S. healthcare system dynamics, provider and payer models, and health tech trends.
    • Strong analytical and financial skills; experience with data analysis and visualization; proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint required.
    • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills, especially in distilling complex healthcare and tech topics.
    • Ability to work collaboratively across clinical and non-clinical teams in a complex, matrixed organization.
    • Passion for healthcare innovation and a mission-driven mindset.


    This position has a hiring range of $70,428 - $131,310
