Job Summary:

MedStar Health is looking for a Diabetes Care & Education Specialist to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center!  

As a Diabetes Care & Education Specialist, you will deliver comprehensive and seamless services that bridge the gap between the clinical and self-management aspects of diabetes care for our Women/Infant services patients. By providing nutritional counseling and insulin management services in conjunction with the Maternal Fetal Medicine physician.

Primary Duties:

·         Provides diabetes education and management services to patients, including initial patient assessment and ongoing care planning to optimize patient success.

·         Assists in the development and implementation of the perinatal diabetic prevention and treatment program, including, program design, preparation of teaching outlines and handouts, charting materials, standards of care, establishment of policies and procedures.

·         Provide services to an assigned patient caseload to monitor progress and coordinate care with other members of the health care team as appropriate. This position maintains a caseload of patients for ongoing care, as well as participate in screening activities and group educational programs.

·         Evaluates, develops, and provides ongoing reassessment of teaching, education, and charting materials for patients and the obstetrical care team.

·         Consults and advises prenatal and postpartum providers in matters related to diabetes education services. Works with appropriate associates in Women's and Infants' Services for the provision of coordinated diabetes education services.

·         Provides nutritional and diabetic management information to fellow team members and other professional staff through the presentation of in-services to nurses, talks to fellows, and residents, on-going communication with health care providers in matters related to direct patient care, and through participation in team conferences.

Qualifications:

·         Bachelor's degree in Nutrition/Dietetics.

·         Registered Dietitian license - Registered Valid license based on location of practice.

·         3-4 years of progressively more responsible job related experience in diabetes education in a formal diabetes program required

·         CDE - Certified Diabetes Educator Certification; if not already DCES or BC-ADM will sit for the certification examination within 12 months of hire date.

·         Insulin Dosage experience preferred

·         Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist - CDCES Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist preferred.
