Job Summary: 

MedStar Health is looking for a PRN Spoken Language Interpreter to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in our International Services department! 

As a Spoken Language Interpreter, you will be responsible for providing accurate language interpreting services in both English and the target language to non-English and limited English speaking patients. Identify and triage needs and issues to ensure language access and cultural sensitivity; provides appropriate care for these patients and families in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Primary Duties: 

  • Provides oral language interpreting between patients, MedStar Washington Hospital Center medical professionals, personnel and patient's family or representatives. 

  • Provides patient advocacy support, such as helping complete medical forms, working with social workers to obtain Medicaid, etc. 

  • Performs a variety of administrative and clerical tasks including entering appointments in the schedule, scheduling agency interpreters, managing calls via 7-2100 line, etc. 

  • Assists in the identification of service needs for admitted, new and incoming LEP patients and facilitates other aspects of service delivery. 

  • Provides training and in-services to hospital staff and departments on Standards of Practice and Cultural insights. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or GED. 

  • Minimum of 40-hr Medical Interpreting Training with language proficiency required. 

  • Fluency in English and Target language with familiarity with medical terminology required. 

  • 1-2 years' medical interpreting experience required. 

  • Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) from Commission of Healthcare Interpreters must be obtained within 18 months of employment, required. 

  • Certified Medical Interpreters (CMI) or International Medical Interpreters Association Certificate of Accreditation preferred. 

  • Degree in higher education preferred.    

  • Minimum of 6 hours of Medical Interpreting Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within the past year preferred.
