General Summary of Position
The Senior Epic IS Business Intelligence Developer leads design, development, and optimization of MedStar's EPIC Cogito analytics solutions. This role is responsible for architecting, developing, scalable data pipelines, analytics content, and ensuring the integrity and performance of data integration of EHR analytics processes. Collaborates with clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders to deliver actionable insights, supports claims data aggregation, and applies architectural best practices to meet business, technical, and regulatory requirements for MedStar Health's EHR data & analytics needs. Provides mentorship to community and analytic spoke developers and contributes to the advancement of MedStar Health's data maturity and analytics strategy.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Leads the development and testing of complex analytics content using MedStar Health's EHR Epic Cogito tools (e.g., Reporting Workbench, Radar, SlicerDicer, Cogito SQL) to support financial, operational, and clinical reporting. Consults on the development of new, modified, and foundational Epic-released content to meet the needs of executive and operational stakeholders.
  • Works with the Epic hosting team to architect and optimize ETL pipelines and data integration processes for Epic Cogito into Caboodle, including scheduling, monitoring, and error remediation.
  • Utilizes Epic data model expertise to design and implement custom data models and database structures in Caboodle to support scalable and reusable analytics solutions.Designs and implements custom data models and database structures in Caboodle and Delta Lake to support scalable and reusable analytics solutions.
  • Supports claims data aggregation workflows, including file transfer setup, validation, monitoring, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders
  • Collaborates with subject matter experts and stakeholder groups to understand reporting needs and translate them into cohesive, technical, and analytics solutions..
  • Leads testing, validation, and peer review of analytics content, data pipelines, and ETL processes to ensure accuracy, performance, and compliance for the distribution of analytics content to data consumers. Leads consulting engagements that involve MedStar Health informatics, clinical applications, and other relevant parties to ensure the reliability and success of analytics products.
  • Leads touchpoints with the Epic hosting team to monitor and troubleshoot data quality issues and ETL performance across the Epic Cogito database platform.
  • Maintains advanced knowledge of Epic Cogito database technologies, data integration methods, Epic/third-party BI tools, and industry best practices.
  • Establishes and promotes architectural guidelines related to Epic Cogito solutions to improve scalability, security, performance, data recovery, and usability in the design and implementation of Epic Cogito analytics solutions.
  • Leads multiple design and development projects, ensuring alignment with business objectives, technical standards, and data governance requirements in partnership with key groups, such as Enterprise Analytics, IS, MAP Community of Practice, and others.
  • Actively reviews upgrade documentation related to Epic Cogito features and determines how to implement the changes, while being responsible for applying the build and maintenance of Epic Cubes, Extracts, Slicer Dicer models, third-party BI tools, and Epic data in Caboodle.
  • Mentors the community of practice and other Cogito team developers, providing technical guidance on best practices, development standards, and solution design.
  • Required on-call support to include weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Frequency of rotation will vary depending on need/size of department. Must be willing to carry a cell phone and be available for 24 x 7.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree In Computer Science or Related Field of Study required and
    • Master's degree In Computer Science or Related Field of Study preferred
    • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

    Experience

    • 5-7 years experience in BI development, database design or data integration. required
    • Experience with Epic data models (Chronicles, Clarity, Caboodle). Experience with data warehousing models, designing processes for complex data structures, and using best practices in data ingestion integration. Experience in BI reporting and analysis, with advanced skills using BI tools such as Tableau or Power BI. preferred
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • EPIC - EPIC Certification EPIC - EPIC Certification within 90 Days required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Familiarity with Epic workflows and operational system usage.
    • Skilled in the practical use of SQL and/or Python
    • Proficiency data modeling and ETL processes
    • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
    • Ability to coordinate activities across technical and clinical teams


    This position has a hiring range of $102,460 - $175,968
