Overview:
Performs a clinical audit of the accuracy and completeness of patient charges. The clinical charge audit is to ensure that all appropriate charges are captured per patient. Ascertains that pre-certification has been completed for all surgical patients and works collaboratively with other departments to accomplish it. Investigates surgical case denials.
Primary Aspects:
a. Verifies that appropriate charges have been documented on charge sheets and entered into computer.
b. Reviews OR log/patient record: Assures accuracy of journal log (surgical procedure, time); Performs clinical audits for accuracy and completeness of Intra-operative patient charges; Implants captured (implant log).
c. Runs specific reports for Anesthesia, OR, Ancillary departments, Finance and Administration.
d. Maintains master item files for EPIC: Procedure file; Surgeon; Staff/ Anesthesia
e. Maintains charge master: Updates CPT, DRG code information; Add/delete/changes in pricing; Medicare pass through information.
f. Investigates patient denials: Develops strategies to prevent future denials.
g. Knowledge of patient charging process.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Previous clinical expertise or knowledge and experience in billing and/or coding in a clinical setting.
- Required Education: High school diploma or GED required
- Other: Must possess the ability to identify supplies and/or other patient charges that are associated with specific procedures and/or surgeon practices. Knowledge of implant practices and equipment usage is extremely valuable based on the high cost of these line items.
