Shift: Part-Time (24 hrs. Week), Days

Overview:

  Maintains professional accountability for provision of patient care for the assigned patients. Coordinates the patient care in conjunction with other departments. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information. Performs echocardiography procedures for interpretation by physicians. Provides the patient care essential to echocardiography procedures. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.   Job Description:  

Safety/Risk Management:

1. Follows policy/procedures for Incident Reporting.

2. Follows Confidentiality Policy/Procedures.

3. Complies with Infection Control Guidelines.

4. Creates a safe environment for co-workers and patients: Fall Precaution, Restraint Management, Patient Identification, Department Specific Policies.

5. Respects patient's/guest's personal property.

6. Adheres to hospital-wide and specific department safety regulations: Fire and Tornado; Environmental Safety.

7. Performs equipment safety checks.

8. Complies with patients' rights/regulations.

 

Coordination of Services:
1. Functions as Preceptor for new co-workers.
2. Coordinates workflow by communicating to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
3. Demonstrates ability to direct and/or assist with the work activities of department consistent with patient needs and staff capabilities.
4. Identifies and resolves problems related to patient, families, physicians, staff, and equipment.

5. Accepts delegation of tasks.

6. Demonstrates responsibility for verifying orders and obtaining new orders for testing when necessary.

7. Participates in quality improvement activities that ensure and enhance quality of patient care and/or reporting mechanisms. Evaluates technical quality of exams.

 

Primary Aspects:

1. Demonstrates proper time management skills and priority setting.

2. Assures all patient charges/credits are entered appropriately.

3. Measures and records all findings for the physicians to interpret.
4. Documentation is factual, accurate, organized, complete, current, and confidential.
5. Identifies patient education needs and utilizes appropriate resources to meet those needs.
6. Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and change.
7. Performs echocardiographic examinations including routine and emergency procedures. Performs portable exams in patient rooms, intensive care units, emergency room and operating room. Documents findings for physician interpretation.
8. Evaluates appropriateness of orders for examination. Obtains appropriate clinical history and documents information. Retrieves/prepares patient files. Schedules examinations and instructs patients in exam procedures.

 

Communication Management:
1. Communicates patient goals, objectives and changes in status to other health care team members and utilizes input to revise care plan for optimum patient benefit.
2. Makes independent decisions in routine and complex cardiac situations and informs appropriate persons of actions and results.
3. Communicates to appropriate leadership with issues within the department.

 

Technology:
1. Demonstrates competence in initiating and maintaining use of routine equipment and procedures.
2. Demonstrates competence in performing diagnostic echocardiographic procedures.
3. Performs technical skills relative to area of nursing and echocardiographic practice.
4. Assists in evaluation of new products, equipment, policies, procedures and standards.

 

Competency Level:
1. Demonstrates the ability to perform most routine examinations proficiently and independently.

 

Qualifications:

Education:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Prerequisite for education and required clinical experience from American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

Certification: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) with ARDMS or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) with CCI or Registry eligible (must obtain registry within 6 months of eligibility); BLS within 30 days of hire.

Other: Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Echocardiography is a highly-skilled allied health profession requiring judgment and capability in assisting the delivery of health care as it relates to this modality. Responsible for reviewing the pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results, including performing the appropriate procedures that provide a sonographic record of the anatomical, pathological, and/or physiological data necessary for interpretation by a physician. Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: This individual must be capable of walking long distances, transporting ultrasound equipment, and assist in lifting patients. Equipment Used: Ultrasound equipment.
