Job Summary

Mercy Clinic Pediatrics Fenton is seeking a compassionate and patient-focused Medical Assistant to join our pediatric care team. The Medical Assistant supports providers by delivering direct and indirect patient care in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner. This position plays a critical role in creating a positive experience for pediatric patients and their families while ensuring smooth clinic operations.

Working under the supervision of providers and licensed clinical staff, the Medical Assistant functions within their defined scope of practice and in alignment with Mercy's mission, values, and standards of care.

Essential Responsibilities Clinical Duties
  • Greet, room, and prepare pediatric patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, growth measurements, and other patient information.
  • Collect, verify, and update patient medical histories, including medications, allergies, and immunization records.
  • Assist providers during examinations, treatments, and minor procedures.
  • Perform basic diagnostic testing, including urine dipsticks, glucose testing, and EKGs, as deemed competent.
  • Administer vaccines and other delegated clinical tasks in accordance with Mercy policies, state regulations, and scope of practice.
  • Accurately document patient care, procedures, and provider instructions in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Reinforce provider-directed patient and family education regarding treatment plans, medications, preventive care, and follow-up instructions.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of exam rooms and clinical work areas.
  • Monitor and restock medical supplies and equipment.
Administrative Duties
  • Answer phones and assist patients and families with scheduling questions.
  • Perform patient check-in and check-out activities.
  • Coordinate referrals, diagnostic testing, and follow-up appointments.
  • Process, scan, and manage medical records, faxes, and other clinical documentation.
  • Support daily clinic workflow to ensure efficient patient care delivery.
Team and Quality Responsibilities
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, confidentiality, and regulatory standards.
  • Foster a welcoming, family-centered environment for children of all ages.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the Medical Assistant role.
Minimum Qualifications Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • New hire must successfully complete Mercy's MA Clinic Academy training.
Preferred Qualifications Education
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
Experience
  • One year of Medical Assistant experience in an outpatient, ambulatory, family medicine, pediatric, or specialty clinic setting preferred.
Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and families.
  • Ability to build rapport with pediatric patients while maintaining professionalism and compassion.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and clinical documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced pediatric clinic environment.
  • Knowledge of outpatient procedures, vaccinations, and pediatric clinical workflows.
  • Commitment to patient-centered care and continuous professional development.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and respect for diverse patient populations and family dynamics.
Work Environment
  • Outpatient pediatric clinic with frequent patient and family interaction.
  • Fast-paced environment caring for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids; personal protective equipment (PPE) provided.
  • Requires standing, walking, lifting, and use of medical equipment throughout the day.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to push, pull, and/or lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during each shift.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, twist, squat, reach, and grip to perform job duties safely and effectively.
