Overview:
Under the direction of the RN or LPN, assists in the individualized care of the patient to achieve the patients highest level of wellness. Works cooperatively with others as part of a team; recognizes the importance of group goals. Performs designated clinical procedures and nonclinical support tasks essential to providing care to the patient.
JOb Description:
Primary Responsibilities:
- Administers daily hygiene measures.
- Performs routine daily activities: ambulation, ensures dietary needs are met (ex. intake documentation feeding assistance), turns and positions patients, observes for skin breakdown and utilize appropriate supplies to perform daily care.
- Maintains Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Gathers and records patient data (ex. vital signs) and documents in EMR. Files reports accurately and timely - prepares charts for admission/discharge/transfers.
- May perform point of care testing or specimen collection as determined by unit. (ex. glucose monitoring)
- Observes changes or unusual occurrences in patient condition and reports them immediately to the appropriate personnel. Communicates with other members of the healthcare team to optimize the care of the patient.
- Participates in the admission, discharge and transfer of patients and their belongings.
- Demonstrates appropriate stewardship of resources, charge reconciliation process and document charges accordingly.
- Utilizes good clinical judgement and effectivetime managementskills.
- Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and accepts delegation of tasks while operating within scope of practice.
- Maintain compliance with certifications and eLearningassignments
- Performs clerical duties as needed (i.e., answers phones, monitors lights).

- Urinary catheterindwelling (M/F) removal
- Wound Care- nonsterile Dressingchange
- Wound Care- Sterile dressingchange
- IV removal
- Urinary Catheter Specimen- vialeurlockport- requires separatecompetency
- Suture tray setup
- Chest tube setup
- Visual Acuity
- Pelvic Exam Set up
- Burn dressing changesanddebridement
- Handheld Bovie Pens
- Whirlpool baths for wound care
- Collection of Cultures
- Fecal Management System-care and removal
- Ostomy device change
- Wound vac cannister change
- Nurse Techscan perform the following skills with a Nurse present:
- NG tube insertion
- NG management and removal
- Fecal Management System insertion
- ETT suction
- Enema
- Disimpaction
- PIV Insertion
- Other duties as assigned.
The following skills/tasks are examples that cannot be completed by the Nurse Tech:
- Arterial and Venous Fistulas or Grafts - Care
- Arterial Catheter: Insert; Remove; Setup tubing; Change dressing
- Blood sampling from an intravenous (IV) or arterial catheter
- Central Venous Access Devices (CVAD) - PICC, CVC, Implanted Port, Dialysis, Sheath/Introducer: Insert, remove, set up tubing
- Emergency Department Triage
- Epidural Catheter: Insert; Remove; Setup tubing; Change dressing
- Urinary Catheter insertion
- Initiate restraints
- Intraosseous (IO) Catheter: Insert; Remove; Setup tubing; Change dressing
- Midline Catheter: Insert; Remove; Setup tubing; Change dressing
- Obtain Arterial Blood Gas
- Pain pump infusion
- Patient/Family Primary Education
- PCA: Care and Maintenance, Monitor
- Receive critical results
- Ventilator, CPAP, BiPAP - Care and Maintenance
Safety/Risk Management:
- Follows Mercy policy and procedures related to safety, confidentiality, and patient rights/regulations.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and practices infectionpreventiontechniques.
- Assesses safety needs and provides for a safe environment: ex: Fall Precautions; Restraint Management; Patient Identification; Unit/Departmental Specific Policies; Safe Patient Handling
- Participates in Quality Improvement activities that ensure and enhance quality of patient care.
Technology:
- Utilizes unit-specific technology to perform specific duties.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma, G.E.D.and enrolled in board-certified nursing program. Prior to employment, the nurse tech shall provide student transcripts indicating they have completed Fundamentals of Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and provide competency skills list from their learning institution. The nurse tech must remain in good standing with their school of nursing while in this role. This program is for nursing students only, if a student leaves a program for any reason, they can no longer be a nurse tech.
Certifications: BLS Required within one month of hire-
Other: Minimum Physical Requirements- Position requires individuals to push, pull, and/or lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
- Position requires prolonged standing and walking eachshift
- Position requires the ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to performduties
Preferred Experience:EMT, Paramedicor Previous Patient Care Experience
Preferred Certifications:Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Patient Care Tech (CPCT), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Unlicensed Assistant (AUA) in the State of Missouri.
