Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Mountrail-Williams Electric Cooperative Williston, North Dakota

Mountrail-Williams Electric Cooperative (MWEC) is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Chief Financial Officer (CFO), reporting directly to the General Manager (GM). 

Headquartered in Williston, ND, in the northwest corner of the state, Mountrail-Williams is a member-owned cooperative that exists to meet the changing needs of its membership, to provide them with personal, excellent service and to keep them fully informed about their cooperative.

The CFO will be integral in managing:

  • Assets of $1.2 billion
  • Annual revenue in excess of $435 million
  • Distributing electricity to over 21K Meters
  • Peak of just over 800 MW in 2023
  • 128 employees

Applicants for this position will be a critical partner to the General Manager and a leader on the Executive Management Team.  The selected candidate will be a leader with a high level of personal integrity and ethical standards.  The CFO will use proven leadership skills to cultivate and instill a culture of integrity, teamwork, trust, and innovation within the organization.

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides executive leadership, supervision, and technical expertise in the management of the accounting/finance and billing departments.  The CFO also provides financial analysis and advice to the General Manager and Board of Directors in the formulation and implementation of the strategic plan of MWEC. The CFO is primarily responsible for the planning, direction, coordination, review and monitoring of all financially related policies and procedures. 

This position directs short and long-range financial plans and recommends changes based on the analysis and projection of financial position.  In addition, ensures the proper utilization and internal control of MWEC assets. The CFO is responsible for the billing, rate design, long-range financial planning, capital credit, financial analysis, accounting, accounts payable, fixed asset, payroll, corporate insurance, purchasing, and tax functions. While there may be occasional work-from-home options available during special circumstances, this position is not a remote job, and daily attendance at the office is needed.

MWEC seeks candidates with the following skills/expertise:

  • Proven leadership and team building skills.
  • A bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or related field is required. A master's degree in business administration, accounting, or finance and/or a CPA is desirable.
  • Experience in a senior management position including the full range of financial and accounting functions, including staffing, and leading the financial department in a medium or large business is preferred. Electric cooperative experience is desirable.
  • Excellent knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures, and ability to direct the development of financial systems.
  • Experience in long-range financial planning, financial analysis, accounting, accounts payable, fixed assets, payroll, corporate insurance, purchasing, and tax functions. Experience in capital credit, utility billing, utility rate design functions preferred.
