Description

At NorthBay Health, the CPT / MAII, collects and prepares lab samples for transport to reference laboratories. Registers patients and enters requisition into electronic medical record.  Facilitates the flow of information into and out of the lab by interacting with the public, using computer systems, delivering reports and answering phones and processes mail. Is responsible for providing direct patient care in support of a provider in an ambulatory care setting under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician.  Administer medications upon authorization and supervision of a physician.  Distribution of staff and patients may require reassignment to other nursing areas.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES

  1. Greets patients in a professional and courteous manner.

  2. Appropriately interprets physician orders.

  3. Completes computer entry or manual requisition of lab requests accurately.

  4. Uses approved methods to obtain all specimens in a timely manner with minimal inconvenience or discomfort to the patient.

  5. Meticulously identifies patients correctly and accepts only properly labeled specimens and requisitions.

  6. Maintains permanent record files and laboratory logs.

  7. Answers the phone in a prompt, courteous and helpful manner.

  8. Maintains a neat and orderly work area and assists in the general cleanliness of the laboratory.

  9. Prepares specimens for transport to reference labs appropriately and promptly.

  10. Keeps an inventory and prepares orders for supplies.

  11. Seeks to continually improve job skills by attending staff meetings and inservices.

  12. Performs the duties of the Clerk/File/Computer Clerk or Courier when assigned.

  13. Processes specimens for Microbiology, stamps in requisitions and plants specimens on appropriate media promptly.

  14. Actively participates in QI activities.

  15. Provides direct patient care according to area assigned, per organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

  16. Prepares patient for provider including vital signs and collection of clinical data.

  17. Administers medications to patients, including, oral, injections, and nebulizer treatments from approved list as ordered by provider.

  18. Ensures smooth operation of the provider's office practice.

  19. Assists provider and/or performs procedures in assigned area within scope of practice.

  20. Documents patient encounters according to nursing policies.

  21. Reviews preventative guidelines, patient status regarding these guidelines and arranges for appropriate follow-up.

  22. Anticipates need for appropriate Health Education material.

  23. Assists provider to ensure follow-up on abnormal results or ongoing problems.

  24. Schedules patients for procedures and provides educational materials as necessary.

  25. Presents a professional demeanor in appearance and attitude.

  26. Floats to other areas as needed.

  27. Under the direction of physician, provides specific treatments in accordance with nursing procedures. 



Qualifications

  1. Education:  High school graduate or equivalent preferred. Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program. Program or additional classwork regarding medication administration required.
  2. Licensure/Certification
    • A Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) certificate or higher Laboratory license (MLT/CLS) issued by the state of California. 
    • Current AHA or equivalent certification in BLS. 

    • Medical Assistant state or national certification required.

    • Medical Administration competency complete.

  3. Experience:  Previous experience with medication administration required.  One year of acute care hospital experience or ambulatory care setting preferred.

  4. Skills:  Phlebotomy, basic medical terminology, typing, math and computer skills.  Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patients in the following age groups: Geriatric, Adult, Young Adult, Pediatric and Neonatal.  Demonstrated effective time-management skills.  Knowledge of medical terminology. Bilingual preferred
