Description

At NorthBay Health, the Ergonomics Specialist II functions as a fully proficient, independent practitioner responsible for delivering comprehensive ergonomics and injury prevention services across NorthBay Health and affiliated partners. This role independently manages a broad range of ergonomic consultations, workplace accommodation requests, and injury prevention initiatives while serving as a consultative resource to employees, leaders, Employee Health, Human Resources, and interdisciplinary teams. The Ergonomics Specialist II contributes to program development, quality improvement efforts, and workplace safety initiatives that support employee health, productivity, and organizational effectiveness.

Primary Job Duties

  • Independently conduct routine and complex ergonomic assessments, workstation evaluations, and job task analyses using current human factors, safety, and injury prevention principles.
  • Evaluate employee anthropometrics, biomechanics, physical demands, environmental factors (such as force, repetition, lighting, and noise), and workstation/workspace design elements to identify workplace risks and develop effective risk reduction strategies.
  • Develop and communicate practical ergonomic recommendations to employees, leaders, and departments to reduce injury risk, improve employee well-being, and enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Develop and deliver education programs related to ergonomics, movement-based injury prevention, body mechanics, safe patient handling, and workplace safety.
  • Independently support ADA interactive process evaluations and workplace accommodation reviews in collaboration with Human Resources, Employee Health, and leadership.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and facilitate implementation of ergonomic equipment, furniture, and workplace modifications; collaborate with vendors and internal stakeholders as needed.
  • Perform follow-up evaluations and consultations to assess implementation, effectiveness, and sustainability of ergonomic interventions.
  • Support OSHA requirements by investigating workplace musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, reports, and program data in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Lead assigned ergonomic training initiatives, workplace safety projects, and injury prevention activities.
  • Analyze injury trends, assessment outcomes, and program metrics to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and risk reduction.
  • Provide ergonomic consulting services and serve as a consultative resource to internal departments and external contracts as assigned by the Rehabilitation Services Manager.
  • Maintain current knowledge of ergonomics, human factors, workplace safety, and regulatory standards through continuing education and professional development.
  • Travel between NorthBay locations and external sites and transport ergonomic tools and equipment as required.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Human Factors Engineering, Occupational Health, Safety, Industrial Engineering, or a related field required.
  • Advanced training in ergonomics, human factors, occupational health, injury prevention, or safe patient handling preferred.
  • Medical or rehabilitation background preferred.

Experience

  • Four (4) years of experience in human factors/ergonomics, occupational health, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, injury prevention, or a related field required.
  • Experience delivering workplace education, ergonomic assessments, or injury prevention interventions preferred.

Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of human factors, biomechanics, job task analysis, anthropometry, workplace injury prevention, workplace design principles, and safe patient handling principles.
  • Ability to independently manage routine and complex ergonomic consultations across healthcare and non-healthcare environments.
  • Strong teaching, coaching, and facilitation skills with the ability to effectively educate employees, leaders, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate workplace risk factors, analyze injury trends, and develop practical recommendations that support injury prevention and workplace safety goals.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA/Cal-OSHA, Workers' Compensation, ADA, and related regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to contribute to program development, quality improvement initiatives, training programs, and interdisciplinary projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a resource to staff and organizational stakeholders while supporting departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Ability to travel between sites; valid driver's license required.

Physical Effort

  • Attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • Requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach frequently during on-site ergonomic assessments across clinical, office, and industrial environments.
  • May require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of equipment used for ergonomic assessments and training.
  • Requires the ability to demonstrate proper body mechanics, positioning, and movement techniques.
  • Frequent travel between worksites is required.

Hours of Work

  • Assigned shift during outpatient department operating hours.
  • Participation in occasional weekend or holiday coverage may be required.
  • Posted pay range includes 10% differential rate.
