At NorthBay, the Nurse Practitioner – Surgical (NP) - is required to function as a member of the multidisciplinary medical management team. The NP is a health care professional with advanced education and training in the care of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations within their qualified specialty. The NP is responsible for providing patient care within the ambulatory clinic setting and inpatient service under the medical supervision of their supervising surgeons. The NP is also directed by standardized protocols and procedures. There is ongoing collaboration between the NP and the supervising physicians

- Acts as First or Second Assistant in surgery under the supervision of an approved supervising surgeon.
- Performs physical examinations and updates patient history.
- Formulates a diagnosis and treatment plan as appropriate for patient needs.
- Orders ancillary services as appropriate to meet patient needs.
- Reviews all patient lab results and follows-up on abnormal test results. Reviews lab results with patient.
- Requests specialty consultation as approved by the supervising physician.
- Provides patient education as appropriate.
- Provides treatments and procedures as appropriate.
- Directs the overall clinical management of the patient and works closely with members of the clinic team to ensure that patient is receiving appropriate services.
- Counsels patients who require close monitoring for compliance with established treatment plan.
- Coordinates patient care and diagnostic studies with other disciplines including interventions to ensure patient compliance.
- Documents patient care as outlined in the specialty specific Nurse Practitioner policy and protocol.
- Identifies high risk problems and transfers care to appropriate physician.
- Collaborates and communicates with appropriate physicians on patient care issues.
- Collaborates with other members of the health care team to identify patient problems and develop plan of care to address needs of patient.
- Seeks consultation from physician on any cases that he/she may feel exceeds his/her ability to manage, when in doubt of a diagnosis, when a patient fails to respond to treatment or when the patient expresses a desire to see the physician.
- Participates in team conferences to review status of each patient as needed.
- Participates in the development of standards of care and standards of practice as identified by orthopedic department.
- Participates in data collection and outcome measurement to insure quality care is being provided.
- Acts as a resource for staff.
- Assists Director and/or Clinical Manager in the development and implementation of special projects and programs and assists in the monitoring of results.
- Works collaboratively with team members to ensure appropriate and efficient flow of patients through clinic appointments.
- Completes and submits coded fee tickets for each patient encounter.
- Delivers and promotes excellent patient experience, as well as delivers excellent service to internal and external customers.
- Reviews all Emergency Department referrals to assure that patients are scheduled within an appropriate timeline based on diagnosis and assigned to the appropriate provider.
- Applies orthopedic appliances, casts and splints.
- Performs surgical procedures without the personal presence of the supervision physician which are customarily performed under local anesthesia.
- Initiates arrangements for admissions, complete forms and chart requirements pertinent to the patient's medical record.
- Conducts hospital rounds, writes orders, and takes call for the orthopedic surgeon.
- Dictates discharge summaries, histories and physicals.
- Follows and directs patient care while in the hospital setting.
- Initiates arrangement for patient care requiring continued care including home care patients.
- Performs all tasks and procedure delegated consistent with the supervising physician's specialty or usual and customary practice.
Qualifications
- Education: Master's graduate of an accredited nursing program including a Nurse Practitioner Program. Evidence of training related to specialty focus mandatory. Evidence of surgical assistant training from an accredited program and/or RNFA certification is required.
- Licensure/Credentials: Current California licensure as a Nurse Practitioner. Board Certification by the American Nurse Credentialing Center, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, or Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. Maintains a current Furnishing Number for medications. Maintains a current DEA license for schedule II drugs and above or can achieve within 60 days of hire. AHA or equivalent BLS required.
- Experience: Minimum of two years' experience as a NP practicing in a related field. Minimum of one year's experience in the designated specialty area.
- Skills: Demonstrates ability to evaluate patient's physical and emotional status. Demonstrates ability to provide patient care based on age-related needs. Demonstrates current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patients in the following age groups: adult, adolescent, pediatric and geriatric. Ability to use computer, MS Word, Outlook.

- Hours of Work: Variable hours
- Compensation: Hourly rate for per diem $108.88 - $132.40 ( per diem differential included in this rate, max rate is based on 20+ years experience as an NP in specialty)
