Summary:

This position will assist in the educational advancement of Native American youth attending public schools in select communities surrounding the Oneida Nation. The Specialist will establish teacher-student relationships with Native American youth. The incumbent will develop, implement, and monitor individual learning intervention plans to aid Native American youth in obtaining basic core skills, and/or maintaining and improving basic skills for academic performance. Services may include academic skill building, homework completion, teaching organizational skills, and time management. This position is assigned to Hillcrest Elementary School, 4193 Hillcrest Road, Hobart.


Responsibilities:

* Evaluate elementary level youth academic skills and abilities, with an emphasis on literacy. Develop appropriate academic plans, in cooperation with teachers/interventionists, to help students obtain grade level proficiency in reading and math utilizing school, Oneida community, and internet resources
* Design and implement individual academic tutoring plans, especially for reading and math, using a variety of teaching techniques that appeal to a variety of learning styles. Academic tutoring plans are to be age-appropriate, adhere to best practices, and school district curriculum guidelines
* Integrate age-appropriate basic study and organizational skills
* Create curriculum for skill development in cooperation with school personnel and Tribal education programs.
* Learn and incorporate age-appropriate Oneida Language and Culture into interactions with the youth
* Monitor and track student progress throughout the academic year and evaluate preparedness for next grade level
* Maintain required Y.E.S paperwork for individual student files and other necessary reports
* Maintain, monitor and document progress, progress reports, and academic success. Utilize computer skills to develop a system of communication to provide information regarding the youth's progress to parents, Y.E.S. Program, community, and school
* Build and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and teachers
* Participate in Y.E.S. yearly planning sessions to evaluate previous work strategies, to assess and evaluate the priorities and services to be provided in the future. This will include: a. Assisting in the planning and coordinating of program events and tribal special events. b. Contributing to a team effort and accomplish related results as required
* Maintain knowledge of research, developments, and best practices in elementary grade education
* Practice excellent customer service skills at all times to include, but not limited to, addressing customer and co-workers needs courteously and promptly.

Skills:

Essential:
* Knowledge of or willing to learn about the Oneida history and culture
* Knowledge of elementary school organization and thorough understanding of pedagogy and best practices in education
* Operating a personal computer, utilizing programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Outlook
* Well-developed interpersonal skills are required promoting tact, courtesy, respect, objectivity, maturity, and patience while interacting with a wide variety of personalities
* Ability to work as a mentor to students by serving as a positive role model
* Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
* Ability to be sensitive and receptive to the unique needs and learning styles of elementary aged Native American youth
* Ability to work cooperatively with all school personnel and community programs in addressing the needs of the youth
* Ability to develop and effectively carry out instructional activities and lesson plans
* Ability to inform and communicate verbally and in writing in diverse and challenging situations with the ability to process information effectively, identify and define problems and make objective decisions.
* Excellent organizational skills. This requires the incumbent to plan, organize and schedule priorities efficiently and effectively, meet strict deadlines and successfully cope with challenging situations and conditions

Essential:
* Bachelor of Arts in Education General

Credentials:

Essential:
* Driver's License Personal & Tribal Vehicle* Insurance Required
* Wisconsin Elementary/Middle Education Teaching Certificate. Must maintain the Wisconsin Elementary/Middle Teaching Certificate during employment.

Nonessential:
* Ability to complete Oneida Certification on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting is required within three (3) months of employment
* Must maintain training certifications as required by the YES Program.
* Must be CPR and Red Cross First Aide Certified or the ability to obtain within three (3) months of employment. Must maintain CPR and Red Cross First Aide Certification during employment.
* Must complete Blood Borne Pathogen Training.

Essential:

* Two (2) years of successful experience in teaching/tutoring reading and math to Elementary/Middle School youth.

* Two (2) years successful experience utilizing and/or adapting curriculum resources, including structured literacy methods/techniques. 

Nonessential:
* Teaching in a multicultural setting
* Oneida or Native American history and culture preferred

Must be willing and able to obtain additional related education and training.

Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and adhere to the Nation Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Policy.

A Tuberculosis (TB) Screening and/or a 2 step TB Skin Test is required within thirty (30) days of employment.

Must provide a copy of diploma/degree, license, or certification upon employment.
