Pay Range: $60,400 - $93,000

Position Summary

The Supervisor - Backhaul Operations is responsible for leading and optimizing all backhaul activities supporting Penske's customer inbound operation. This role is accountable for achieving and exceeding revenue and load targets tied to our customer's inbound network, ensuring alignment with Penske's broader backhaul strategy, and maintaining operational excellence across assigned lanes and domiciles.

The supervisor will manage day-to-day backhaul execution, coordinate directly with regional and site leadership, and develop relationships with internal teams and external carriers/vendors to drive continuous improvement. This role will also oversee dedicated Lead Load Planners, providing coaching, performance feedback, and training to maximize results. The position serves as the subject matter expert for our customers inbound backhaul, integrating market intelligence, operational constraints, and customer priorities into actionable plans.

Responsibilities:

IB Program Leadership

• Own our Customer's inbound backhaul process, including key KPIs.

• Monitor performance by lane, domicile, and LLP; address underperformance with targeted action plans.

• Provide direct leadership, guidance, and development for assigned LLPs, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy and KPI expectations.

• Partner with our Customer's inbound site leadership to integrate backhaul opportunities into daily operations, removing operational barriers.

• From time to time, represent our customer's inbound backhaul performance in regional and customer-facing reviews (QBRs, business planning, etc.).

• Other Projects as assigned

Metrics

• Track, analyze, and report our Customer's inbound backhaul metrics to leadership, highlighting successes, gaps, and corrective actions.

• Use data to identify high-impact improvement opportunities, including network efficiency, lane fill rates, and empty mile reduction.

• Collaborate with peers and leadership to share best practices and implement process improvements across the network.

IT Systems

• Promote the use and utilization of Penske systems that enhance backhaul, including internal matching platforms, accounting and safety programs used daily to run the activities of our business.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree preferred. If no degree, equivalent work experience is required.

• Concentration in Logistics, Supply Chain preferred

• Three (3) plus years of relevant dispatch experience required.

• Must understand T/L spot market/transactional dynamics.

• Successful track record or multi-tasking, driver responsibilities, HOS and general truckload operations.

• Knowledge of Truckload, Equipment types, Market Rates required.

• Must have strong written/oral communication and organizational skills

• Prior experience in dispatch software and systems preferred - Oracle, SAP, DAT 360 preferred

• Understanding of HOS requirements preferred

• Must be able to work with other departments to increase the overall productivity for the company. Comfortable working in matrix organization

• Ability to manage multiple projects with a sense of urgency while maintaining a high degree of accuracy required.

• Strong negotiation and problem solving skills

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high degree of enthusiasm, professionalism and motivation.

• Must have experience compiling metrics and reporting out the story

• Strong communicator, ability to hustle for loads

• Customer Service experience business to business preferred

• Successful at building relationships to earn repeat business and to gain respect from field locations.

• Stays updated on industry trends

• Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job

• Willingness to travel as necessary, work the required schedule, work at the specific location required, complete Penske employment application, submit to a background investigation (to include past employment, education, and criminal history), and drug screening are required.
