Description

The Public Transit Planner will support the Planning and Special Projects Manager in various aspects of transit planning and analysis. This role offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in data management, analysis, stakeholder engagement, and recommendation development to contribute to the improvement of transit services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Demonstrates behaviors that are consistent with standards for professional and ethical conduct.
  • Assist in the collection, organization, and maintenance of operational datasets, including service hours, service miles, GTFS/GTFS-RT feeds, on-time performance, and ridership data.
  • Contribute to data analysis efforts to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement in transit services.
  • Support recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of transit services based on data analysis findings.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, including cost estimates, service needs assessments, and operational impact assessments for proposed service changes.
  • Participate in meetings and public hearings as required to provide support, gather feedback, and present findings on transit-related projects or initiatives.
  • Collaborate with transportation representatives of partner jurisdictions and municipalities to address route planning issues and service strategies.
  • Aid in the preparation of maps, charts, and graphics for reports, presentations, and operational use under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Assist in meeting periodic reporting requirements for regulatory bodies such as the National Transit Database (NTD) and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA).
  • Participate in training sessions, seminars, or other professional development opportunities provided by the agency to enhance skills and knowledge in transit planning and analysis.
  • Attends in-service training, staff meetings, work sessions, seminars or other opportunities for professional development as made available by the Agency. May provide training for Agency personnel as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university with major course work in urban and transportation planning or a closely related field.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data management and analysis tools/software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact professionally with stakeholders.
  • Eagerness to learn and grow within the transit planning field.
  • 3 years of transportation planning experience or relevant experience in the transit industry.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Advanced knowledge of personal computers, internet utilization techniques, office equipment, and Microsoft Office productivity suite.
  • Must be able to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to prioritize projects and work with minimal direction.
  • Ability and adaptability to attend/lead meetings and events outside of normal business hours.
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, tact, and diplomacy skills.

You will exceed our expectations if you possess:

  • Master's Degree from an accredited university with major course work in urban and transportation planning or a closely related field.
  • Valid CDL with Passenger endorsement and airbrake designation.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud suite, with emphasis on InDesign, and Illustrator.
  • Familiarity with GIS software and mapping concepts.
  • Fluency in Spanish or French, complete with the ability to write and translate correspondence.
  • Experience with Transit data management software (i.e. TransTrack) 

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Must be able to move about the office and between floors; utilize standard office equipment; access filing system/cabinets; and communicate effectively and efficiently in person or by telephone. Must be able to drive an RTA vehicle. Must be able to work in various weather conditions and at various hours for public events. Must be comfortable speaking and interacting with diverse groups of people.
