A Day in the Life of a Ryder Driver

About the Position

Class 1 Driver

The Class 1 Driver is responsible for hauling daily freight from the Edmonton distribution center to the Fort McMurray Oilsands customer.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, provincial, and company regulations, standards, and guidelines
  • Identify and eliminate or minimize safety hazards
  • Maintain accurate records and driver logs
  • Load and unload freight, or assist with loading/unloading as required by the customer

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow written and/or oral instructions, required
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, required
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent follow-up practices
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated commitment to health and safety practices
  • Reliable, punctual, and dependable

Qualifications

  • H.S. Diploma or GED, preferred
  • Minimum of 9 months of verifiable commercial driving experience, required
  • Must not have more than one moving violation or accident (excluding parking) in the last 12 months, required
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement, required

Additional Skills & Expectations

  • Valid Class 1 Driver's License
  • Experience driving manual transmission trucks
  • Flatbed experience is considered an asset
