The Senior Ocean/Climate Specialist responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support research activities focused on the change and variability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC).
  • Research associated impacts on regional and global scale climate phenomena.
  • Proven skill in running and using coupled models.
  • Analyze climate model outputs in comparison with available observational datasets.
  • Programming in Matlab and Python.
  • Execute scientific perturbation experiments using ocean/climate models.
  • Support of the above research activities on:
    • Large-scale ocean dynamics coupled interactions with atmosphere and cryosphere.
    • Associated impacts in the earth system.
    • Running and analyzing ocean and coupled climate models using Python, Fortran, Ferret, and Matlab.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  •  An advanced degree with experience in scientific research in physical oceanography or climate dynamics (or closely related field, such as atmosphere dynamics, earth science, applied math, physics, and AI/ML data science).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Proven skill in running and using ocean and coupled climate models.
  • Diagnostic skills in analyzing simulated and observed datasets.
  • Expert in Python Programming, with experience in Fortran, Matlab, and Ferret.
  • Professional experience in scientific research in physical oceanography or climate dynamics (or closely related field) and evidence of the level of knowledge and skills outlined below.
  • Impeccable communication skills.

Desirable Skills:

  • An advanced degree with experience in scientific research in physical oceanography or climate dynamics (or closely related field, such as atmosphere dynamics, earth science, applied math, physics, and AI/ML data science).

Program and Project Details:

The Ocean and Cryosphere Division goal is to conduct leading research to understand ocean and cryosphere changes and variability; their interactions with weather, climate, sea level, and ecosystems; and advance prediction and projection of future changes. To support this goal, we are developing state-of-the-science community models for the ocean, sea ice, land ice, and fully coupled models. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a system of ocean currents that circulates water within the Atlantic Ocean, bringing warm water north and cold water south.
