SAIC is seeking a Senior Computer Systems Engineer to support the Ocean Biology Processing Group at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).
The Ocean Biology Processing Group (https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov) at GSFC is a world leader in satellite-based remote sensing of the ocean. The OBPG operations include a 24x7 satellite data ingestion, processing and distribution facility with over 10PB of capacity as well as support for data analysis and software development environments. This position will manage the operations, upgrading and maintenance of the OBPG computing systems.
Job Description:
- Manage the activities of the OBPG Systems administration team.
- Configure and maintain the reliable operation of computer and network servers, including high performance computing cluster which uses SLURM for process management.
- Install and upgrade computer components and software, and integrate automation processes.
- Initiate preventive maintenance on the operating systems as well as repair to system/environment problems.
- Monitor and troubleshoot hardware and software errors, documenting problems and resolutions.
- Maintain and update OS and application software and firmware in both server and end-user environments.
- Evaluate, test and recommend procedural, hardware and software solutions to address project needs.
- Compliance with NASA system configuration and patching policies.
- Monitoring of NASA and other IT security sources to allow rapid response to developing security incidents.
- Identification of network attacks and development of mitigation strategies.
Qualifications
Required Education:
- Bachelors and nine (9) years or more experience; Masters and seven (7) years or more experience ; PhD or JD and four (4) years or more experience
Required skills:
- 10+ years of operating systems experience.
- 5 years experience supervising a team of systems administrators.
- Support of Linux server and workstation configurations (Red Hat and Ubuntu preferred).
- Must be able to pass a NASA background check for System Administrators, as well as pass annual NASA IT Security Training courses for end-users and elevated privileges.
- Good interpersonal skills for end-user support and coordination of activities with other groups, mainly in the areas of IT security and compliance.
- Ability to work independently to resolve system issues.
- Good documentation skills.
Desired skills:
- Experience working in the NASA computing environment,
- Automation of administration and compliance tasks over multiple Ubuntu Linux systems with tools such as Ansible.
- Management of a mixed hardware environment with Dell servers and servers from third-party integrators.
- Familiarity with the support of large RAID NAS units.
- Knowledge of ZFS file systems including snapshots and software RAID technology.
- Familiarity with analysis tools for systems and networks.
- Experience with hardware and software firewalls including nftables, iptables and ufw.
- Usage and administration of a trouble ticket and wiki application for managing activities.
- Inventory management of a large hardware configuration and several commercial software subscriptions.
- Familiarity with NASA Procedural Requirements (NPR) documents, especially NPR 2810.
- Familiarity with NIST standards for computing & security (SP 800-53 and others).
- Familiarity with NASA IT Procurement processes.
- Support of a complex public web server running NGINX, serving multiple virtual web sites.
Clearance:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.
Target salary range: $120,001 - $160,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
