Overview
The Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) at the State of Vermont is hiring a District Facilities Manager (DFM) to lead operations in the Northwest region. This dynamic, hands-on role involves overseeing facility maintenance, supervising staff, and managing administrative and planning functions across multiple locations.
As a DFM, you'll coordinate assignments, monitor preventive maintenance, and manage small-scale construction projects. You'll also play a key role in budget planning by assessing needs and making informed recommendations for your district. In addition, you'll ensure proper staffing across all shifts and oversee staff-related expenses including overtime, training, mileage, and reimbursements.
This position requires regular travel to facilities throughout the district and the ability to respond to emergencies when needed. Prior supervisory experience is required, and candidates must successfully complete multiple background checks.

Environmental FactorsWork is performed in both office and field settings, outdoors and inside buildings. Manual dexterity may be needed to operate equipment and use tools. Incumbents must be able to respond anytime when emergencies occur. Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights. Travel to various locations may require private means of transportation. Work in all types of weather can be expected. Wastewater systems and confined spaces are common throughout each district and are hazardous (disease, ventilation, and entrapment issues) and the Facilities Manager must be able to access, evaluate, and assist in these areas. Entering areas immediately after flooding, fires, and other natural and man-made disasters are essential for evaluation. Correctional, Mental Health, and Lab Facilities include infectious disease, risk of assault, mental abuse, and cross contamination of evidence issues.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree AND four (4) or more years in building or plant maintenance and repair work INCLUDING three (3) or more as a supervisor.
OR
Associate degree AND six (6) or more years in building or plant maintenance and repair work INCLUDING three (3) or more as a supervisor.
OR
High School diploma, trade school graduation or equivalent AND eight (8) or more years in building or plant maintenance and repair work INCLUDING three (3) or more as a supervisor.
Preferred QualificationsA degree or coursework in construction, architectural or engineering or closely related.
