Overview

Join a dedicated team of civil and criminal investigators at the Vermont Secretary of State's Office of Professional Regulation (OPR), where your work directly protects the public and ensures accountability across more than 50 licensed professions.

 

As a Civil Investigator, you'll manage your own caseload and lead investigations into allegations of professional misconduct. Your work will include gathering evidence, conducting interviews with witnesses and respondents, and preparing detailed reports that support civil enforcement actions. You'll investigate a wide range of cases involving professionals such as nurses, pharmacists, dentists, real estate agents, and more making every day varied and meaningful.

 

You'll collaborate closely with prosecuting attorneys on regulatory cases and have opportunities to support criminal investigations, expanding your experience and impact.

 

Work Environment: This is a home-based role with travel throughout Vermont using an assigned fleet vehicle for interviews and investigations. Occasional in-person meetings in Montpelier are required.

 

What We're Looking For:
•    Knowledge of Vermont laws and investigative practices 
•    Strong interviewing, documentation, and communication skills 
•    Ability to work independently and manage a caseload effectively 
•    High level of integrity and professionalism 
•    Prior investigative or law enforcement experience preferred, but not required

Environmental Factors

This is a home-based position with expected periodic office attendance and interaction.  Duties may require travel throughout the state for which a fleet vehicle will be permanently assigned. The nature of the work may create situations with licensees with strong adversary opinions and/or highly reticent individuals may be encountered during investigations.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent AND eight (8) years or more at or above a technical level in investigatory, law enforcement, para-legal, or criminal justice work.

OR

Associate's degree or higher OR two (2) years or more of full-time college coursework in law enforcement, criminal justice, or para-legal studies AND six (6) years or more at or above a technical level in investigatory, law enforcement, para-legal, or criminal justice work.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior VT Law Enforcement Officer or Federal Law Enforcement Agent.
