The Vermont Department of Health's Bennington District Office has an opening for a dynamic Nutrition Assistant to join our interdisciplinary team of professionals dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of Vermonters in Bennington County. This position is an opportunity to work with clients and community partners in direct support of the Women Infants and Children (WIC) program. This is a nutrition education and clerical position that advances our mission: To protect and promote the best health for all Vermonters. The successful candidate will:
• Work one on one with WIC participants by providing certification services that include nutrition education and support
• Use motivational interviewing and problem-solving skills to resolve nutrition-related questions from participants and community partners
• Provide clerical duties that support the enrollment, recruitment, and retention of WIC participants and overall office operations
• Participate in programmatic and office wide initiatives such as breastfeeding, lead screening, and emergency preparedness
• Assist with the procurement and planning of nutrition education activities specific to maternal and child health nutrition and health promotion

AHS BACKGROUND CHECKS: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
Environmental FactorsDuties primarily performed in District Office settings or in outlying service sites.
Travel to outlying sites will require a driver's license. Private means of transportation may be required.
Occasional travel to statewide trainings required. Potential travel in difficult weather conditions.
There is considerable interaction with staff, clients, community partners, providers and the general public. At times of public health emergencies (floods, infectious disease outbreaks, etc.) individuals may be expected to assist. Physical demands vary with the position; generally limited to carrying equipment needed to conduct clinic and education activities. Employees work with a variety of clients and may have contact with potentially dangerous and combative individuals as well as a wide variety of illnesses and diseases. Certain functions may require duty outside of normal work hours.
Minimum QualificationsAssociate degree or higher and at least 3 nutrition courses/9 credits of nutrition coursework
OR
1 years of experience as a Health Outreach Program Specialist II
Preferred QualificationsDegree in nutrition or health, education or a human services field.
Experience in a health or nutrition related community setting.
