Join the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and help keep Vermonters informed and safe during emergencies!

 

The Operations Specialist supports the Vermont Emergency Management (VEM) Watch Desk by monitoring developing incidents, maintaining statewide situational awareness, and helping deliver timely public alerts through Vermont's emergency notification systems. This role works closely with state and local partners to ensure accurate information reaches decision-makers and the public.

 

We are seeking candidates with experience in emergency management, public safety communications, dispatch, military operations, or similar environments who can stay organized, communicate clearly, and perform effectively under pressure.

PUBLIC SAFETY BACKGROUND CHECKS: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position to include Motor Vehicle/Criminal Records, Personal History, Credit and any additional background check(s).

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. This position requires periodic travel to local municipalities and work outside of normal office hours to include weekends and holidays. Working in an on-call and/or standby status may be required. High-stress operational environment during incidents.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree or higher in emergency management, public administration, public administration, homeland security, or a closely related field AND two (2) or more years of experience in emergency management operations, public safety communications, dispatch, emergency planning, military operations, or government operations.

OR

Four (4) or more years of experience in emergency management operations, public safety communications, dispatch, emergency planning, military operations, or government operations.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in an Emergency Operations Center or Watch Desk environment

Experience with public alerting systems or emergency communications

Special Requirements

Applicants are subject to security clearance by the Department of Public Safety

A current, valid driver's license is required

 

Must obtain and maintain required system access credentials for VT-Alert, IPAWS, and SEOC information systems

Must be available for standby, rotating shift, nights, weekends, holidays, and extended duty hours during emergencies, disasters, exercises, or periods of heightened readiness

Must be able to report to the State Emergency Operations Center or other designated duty location within established timeframes during activations

Must maintain required training and certifications as a condition of continued employment
