The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is seeking a Construction Materials Testing Technician in our Billings, MT office. Tetra Tech's AASHTO accredited laboratory and field testing and inspection program has a wide range of equipment, facilities, and staff to support engineering design and construction quality control. Our laboratories conduct testing for soil, rock, and construction materials that range from common index tests or sophisticated triaxial shear, permeability, and consolidation tests. Field testing and inspection projects include airport terminals and runways, dam and spillway construction, all sizes of commercial construction, and civil infrastructure. Technicians and inspectors are certified by ACI, MDT, WAQTC, AWS and other appropriate agencies.

The Construction Materials Testing Technician will complete field and laboratory testing, observations, and inspection of construction materials over a variety of construction types including but not limited to civil and structural. Materials commonly tested and inspected for quality include soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, asphalt, bolting/welding, wood, spray applied fireproofing and others.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs work as directed in accordance with training and specified ASTM, AASHTO, MDT, MPWSS, County, City etc. procedures.

  • Communicate testing, observation, and inspection results to Tetra Tech project manager, client quality assurance representative, contractor quality control representative, and others as required.

  • Follow designated chain of custody processes to collect and transport material specimen to laboratory for analysis.

  • Maintains Tetra Tech internal and accredited quality standards including training, equipment calibrations, equipment maintenance, and reporting.

  • Use reporting software to create clear, accurate, and well written reports for submittal and review by designated Tetra Tech senior staff.

  • Follow and adhere to all Tetra Tech safety guidelines and standards.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum 1 to 2 years of relevant or related experience.

  • Must have strong mathematical aptitude.

  •  A background in the construction industry.

  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.

  • Computer skills in Microsoft office suite, especially Excel.

  • A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

     

Preferred Qualifications:

  •  A degree in Engineering Technology, Construction Management or similar is preferred, but will train the right candidate with a background in the construction industry.

  • A strong candidate will have one or more current ACI, WAQTC, AWS, or CWI certifications.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.

  • Ability to travel and perform field work (approx. 25 - 50% of travel required).

  • Ability to walk across variable terrain, including uneven ground, in all weather conditions (hot/cold temperatures <40 degrees or >95 degrees, loud noises, heavy equipment, etc.) for field work and oversight.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • This position will be office and field-based (laboratory environment and construction site environment).

  • Field work will include work to be performed outside, as a result will include working frequently in various environmental factors (weather, altitude, terrain, noise, etc.). This can include remaining stationary for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting, and sitting for site assessments, field inspections, oversight, and other field activities.

  • Office/Lab based tasks will include periods sitting or standing, using a computer, and using laboratory resources/equipment.

Additional Information:

  • Full-time, Monday through Friday work schedule (40 hours). Occasionally extended hours may be required based on project and/or client needs (including working overtime and weekends).

  • Work will be performed in an office and field setting (laboratory environment and construction site environment).

Target salary range:  $20.00 to $26.00. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
