Tetra Tech's Hampton Roads office located in Virginia Beach, VA is seeking a junior level geologist to provide field and technical support on environmental assessment, investigation, and remediation projects, primarily in the areas related to geology, hydrogeology, and data interpretation/ visualization.  Under general supervision, plans, conducts, and supervises tasks such as fieldwork, sampling, design, construction oversight, operations, and maintenance (O&M), and report writing on environmental and engineering projects.  Performs projects in accordance with RCRA, CERCLA, UST, CWA and other appropriate state and federal regulations.  Reviews progress and evaluates results.  Interprets and applies organization policy. Reviews progress with management. Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen due to the service we provide our client.

Responsibilities:  The candidate will be responsible for a variety of program and project related tasks to implement complex field investigation and remediation projects under various environmental regulatory programs for both government and private clients. These projects will include multimedia sampling, interpretation of data and designing integrated active and institutional remediation programs. Additional essential duties include:

•    Field work planning and preparation, drilling and monitoring well installation oversight, logging boreholes, remedial system (e.g., subsurface injections) implementation and operation and maintenance, and report preparation. Field work will also include collection, and proper documentation of environmental sampling.
•    Perform assessment, investigative, and remedial fieldwork that typically includes testing and sampling of soils, groundwater, and other media.
•    Preparation of work plans and sampling and analysis plans, drilling specifications, environmental assessment and investigation reports, and other technical documents.
•    May perform a range of tasks requiring advanced scientific, geologic, and engineering analytical techniques, including interpretation of hydrogeologic settings impacted by contamination.
•    Other duties may be assigned as determined appropriate by the supervisor based on client's needs and candidate's level of experience 

Qualifications & Requirements:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. •    40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER training and current 8-hour refresher training is preferred. Other OSHA training (10 hour or 30-hour Construction) is desirable.
•    Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.

This position requires the candidate to be a U.S. Citizen due to the projects they will be working on.
 

Education & Experience:  
•    Bachelor's degree (BS) in geology or related environmental field required, Master's degree (MS/MA) and/or geology-related academic experience is preferred
•    Zero to three years directly related professional experience and/or training in environmental geosciences-related work (advanced degree may serve as 2 years of experience).
•    Candidates must be highly motivated, self-starters that want to further a career in environmental consulting.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Most “on-site” activities will be five days or less in duration. There may be occasions to travel to more remote sites within the United States. These trips normally have a duration of two weeks or less and are not frequent. The ability to support clientele for extended durations (more than two weeks), would be discussed with the successful candidate if feasible. 

Physical demands may include walking over uneven terrain in a wide range of weather conditions (wet/dry, hot/cold). Occasional heavy lifting (50 lbs or less) may be involved. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level is usually moderate in the primary work environment i.e., a typical business office with computers, printers, and light pedestrian traffic. When performing field work, the employee may be near moving equipment and/or machinery and may be subject to a range of weather conditions in those areas. Occasionally, work assignments will require the employee to travel via vehicle or aircraft.

Language & Communication Skills: 
•    Must be fluent in the English language – writing, reading, and speaking.
•    Must have a high level of written and oral communication skills and the ability to work and collaborate with employees at all levels and disciplines.  
•    Successful candidate must possess effective communication skills, both orally and in written form. 
•    Ability to effectively present information, communicate, and respond to questions.  
•    Ability to read, research, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical documents and procedures, and government regulations.  
•    Ability to write detailed reports and business correspondence.  
•    Ability to read, understand, and execute SOPs.

Mathematical Skills:.  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Other mathematical skills required to perform technical analysis in conjunction with their technical specialization.

Other Skills: Excellent computer skills are essential. Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, GIS (as needed for data interpretation), Adobe and other desktop publishing software packages as required to prepare the requirement documents associated with this technical discipline.

Candidate must have the ability to work well in a professional and team-oriented environment, as well as independently. Candidate should possess strong organizational skills, excellent leadership skills, and be client focused.
