We are currently looking for an Intermediate to Senior Coastal/Hydrotechnical Engineer to join our Coastal and Lake Engineering Group, based out of beautiful Vancouver, BC. This position will be part of a dynamic team of engineers and scientists engaged in a wide range of local, national, and international hydrotechnical projects providing engineering and scientific services, including Coastal Engineering, Oceanography, Limnology, and 3-D Hydrodynamic Modelling. We have an internationally recognized level of expertise and are seeking to expand our team!
The ideal candidate is passionate about and enjoys working on a wide variety of oceanography and coastal-related projects ranging from conceptual to detailed engineering designs, and scientific studies.
The ability to see tasks through to completion is critical.
The salary range for this position is $100K to $150K per annum. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
Responsibilities:
- Conducting engineering and scientific studies for several types of projects including:
- Coastal engineering: wing/wave analyses, shoreline erosion protection; hydrotechnical impacts of marinas and breakwaters on nearshore environments within lakes/oceans; wave modelling; beach nourishment; green shoring; climate change coastal adaptations; sediment transport characterization; flood mapping and flood construction level determination.
- Oceanography: ocean/lake/river circulation and water quality modelling; met ocean studies; oil spill modelling; extreme event analyses; ADCP/CTD surveys.
- Detailed Design and Construction: engineering design for submarine cables, pipelines, outfall and diffusers, riprap/groyne/revetment installations, dredging.
- Leading modelling tasks using tools such as SWAN, XBeach, H3D, Delft 3D, SPILLCALC, Flow-3D, ANSYS Fluent, Tecplot and Matlab. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be able to lead from the start various studies/designs to ensure accuracy and timely completion.
- Planning projects, developing accurate scopes of work, cost estimates, project plans, schedules, and deliverables to execute high quality projects on time and on budget.
- Executing projects in compliance with Tetra Tech Canada Quality Management System procedures, communicating with the team and client, reconciling financials, and archiving files upon completion.
- Developing, mentoring, and coaching project teams.
- Maintaining current knowledge of leading-edge project management practices.
- Writing effective reports and proposals.
- Liaising between Tetra Tech's offices across Canada and the clients we serve.
- Participating in business development activities for the Coastal and Lake Engineering Group
Qualifications:
- Completion of a Master's or a Ph.D. in coastal engineering, oceanography or civil/hydrotechnical engineering.
- Registration as a P.Eng. (Professional Engineer) in British Columbia (or other Canadian province).
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant engineering experience is essential. Experience in a consulting role with 5 years as a minimum.
- Extensive experience in:
- Coastal engineering and wave/hydrodynamic numerical modelling.
- Detailed design of coastal structures as well as installation and/or construction management (riprap, green shoring, outfalls, etc.).
- Data analysis and coding (Matlab, Python, Fortran).
- Familiarity with SWAN, XBeach, WAMIT, CORMIX and/or Delft 3D (-4 or -FM).
- Past experience in CFD tools (ANSYS or FLOW-3D) will be a plus.
- Experience in dock design, dredging projects, Arctic projects, or climate change related projects will be an asset.
- Experience in Interior BC and/or the Okanagan area will be a plus.
- A positive and solving-problem attitude.
- Being a quick learner and highly adaptable will be an asset since you will be encouraged to utilize new/different/complex tools in this role.
- Must have proven, demonstratable capabilities in leading and writing proposals, writing reports and conducting technical communications. Ability to lead a proposal will be a must.
- Experience and aptitude for developing client relationships while being cognizant of project budgets and timelines and working in a team setting within a consulting environment will be essential.
- Being able to draw on a strong academic knowledge of hydrotechnical engineering and coastal engineering will be key. We work as a team with the expectations that the successful candidate for this position will draw from past experience to hit the ground running on some proposal preparations and projects.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written). Our project teams and clients are often multi-discipline in nature with varying levels of technical background; your ability to collaborate with team members of varying backgrounds and convey technical findings to non-technical stakeholders is critical.
