MAP SU delivers the Leadership & Skills program and provides enabling services to the Transnational Crime (MAP‑TNC) portfolio, supporting activities such as scholarships, short courses, masterclasses, regional dialogues, on‑award and alumni engagement, and alumni grants.

About the role
The Scholar and Alumni Engagement Specialist will work within the Leadership & Skills team, reporting to the Team Leader, Leadership and Skills, and supporting the Scholar & Alumni Engagement Manager. The Specialist will design and implement alumni and scholar outreach, professional development, networking, and alumni grants across Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar; contribute to the Mekong Leaders Network (in‑Australia program for scholars); and ensure inclusive, high‑quality, GEDSI‑integrated programming that aligns with DFAT strategic priorities.

Key responsibilities

  • Support management and delivery of the Mekong Leaders Network and associated events (regional and in‑Australia), encouraging diverse participation and sustainable practices.
  • Co‑design alumni engagement strategies and outreach, working with the MAP Hub and Leadership & Skills Thematic Working Group to set regional priorities.
  • Draft scoping documents, concept notes and procurement inputs for regional events and activities.
  • Design and operationalise the alumni impact grants program, including tools and procedures for monitoring grant progress, financial management, and fiduciary/fraud risk mitigation.
  • Support MEL data collection and evaluation for continuous program improvement in coordination with the MAP SU MEL team.
  • Liaise with Australian Embassies, Australia Awards managing contractors and regional partners; participate in relevant coordination groups.
  • Produce reports, updates and communications in line with DFAT/MAP branding and communications protocols; support promotional and media content.
  • Ensure compliance with child protection, PSEAH, GEDSI and program risk‑management standards; identify and escalate risks as needed.

Selection criteria — Qualifications & experience

  • Tertiary qualification in international development, education, public relations, human resources or related field (postgraduate desirable).
  • Minimum 3–5 years' relevant experience in alumni relations, stakeholder engagement, program coordination or similar roles — preferably in international development, education or regional cooperation.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including alumni, adult learners, government agencies and academic institutions.
  • Experience designing MEL‑informed engagement activities, grants management or event coordination.
  • Familiarity with DFAT scholarships/alumni programs or similar donor programs is advantageous.
  • Strong writing, editing and communications skills, including social media and promotional content development.

  • English fluency required; proficiency in Thai, Vietnamese, Khmer, Burmese or Lao desirable.
  • Commitment to GEDSI, child protection, PSEAH and ethical program delivery.

Skills & personal attributes

  • Proactive, self‑motivated and highly organised with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong project and event management skills; ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Cultural competency and ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated integrity, ethical conduct and accountability consistent with DFAT and Tetra Tech values.
  • Willingness to travel within the Mekong subregion as required.
