Position Summary
Tetra Tech is seeking a Senior Engineer, System Planning to lead and support the development of innovative solutions that improve grid reliability and support the energy transition. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing planning solutions for electric utilities—primarily focused on distribution systems—while contributing to broader energy transformation initiatives worldwide. You will thrive in a nimble, startup-like environment that values creativity, agility, and technical excellence.
Position Responsibilities
- Lead the creation of advanced grid planning solutions, methodologies, and products that enhance transmission and distribution reliability for utility clients.
- Conduct system reliability analyses, including steady-state, transient stability, transfer capability, short circuit, and EMT studies.
- Work closely with both local and global colleagues in a dynamic startup environment to co-create solutions for complex energy planning challenges.
- Develop strategies that support decarbonized and resilient energy systems.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, provide expert insights, and represent the team in client and internal meetings.
- Guide junior engineers and foster knowledge sharing within the team.
- Contribute to business development, including proposal writing, client engagement, and strategic growth initiatives as needed.
- Local and international travel may be required, up to 10% of the time.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with solid understanding of the fundamentals of power system analysis
- At least 5 years of consulting and/or utility working experience in North America
- Professional Engineer Designation (P.Eng.) within Canada
- Proficiency in distribution planning using CYME, PSCAD or other similar tools
- Proficiency in automating system studies using Python
- Technical experience with one or more of the following: SQL, R, or JavaScript
- Track record of solving analytical problems, using a systematic and logical approach, with clear outcomes
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent deliverables and prioritize tasks based on business objectives
- Proactive attitude and willingness to tackle challenges head-on
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical insights for diverse audiences
Preferred but Not Required Qualifications
- Experience in transmission planning using PSS ® E or other similar tools
- Experience using visualization tools such as Power BI and Tableau to build out and report on key performance metrics.
- Familiarity with key electrical utility operational and information systems and data (OMS, EMS, SCADA, EAM, ERP, etc.)
- Experience with data engineering, architecture, modeling, and practical experience with DevOps and MLOps
- Knowledge of digital asset product development and design thinking
- Experience in developing and presenting business cases
