Position Summary:
The Senior Transportation Engineer will play a key role in the design and delivery of roadway and transportation infrastructure projects across Texas and the surrounding region. This position supports public agency clients by providing innovative, efficient, and cost-effective design solutions that enhance mobility and safety for the traveling public. The Senior Transportation Engineer contributes to Tetra Tech's mission by leading technical design efforts, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring the successful execution of transportation projects that improve community connectivity and infrastructure resilience.
Essential Job Functions:
The following duties are considered essential to the role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions:
Lead and perform the design of roadway, highway, and interchange projects, including geometric design, roadway alignment, cross sections, grading, and drainage coordination.
Prepare and oversee production of plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) in accordance with client and state DOT standards.
Oversee construction phase services including client and contractor coordination, responding to RFIs, and reviewing construction submittals.
Prepare and oversee production of alternative concepts and preliminary design schematics in accordance with client and state DOT standards.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including structural, traffic, environmental, and drainage engineers to ensure integrated project delivery.
Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables, ensuring adherence to quality standards and contractual requirements.
Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and CAD designers.
Participate in client meetings and support proposal development through scope definition and technical input for transportation design and construction engineering inspection services.
Conduct design reviews, constructability reviews, QA/QC checks, and value engineering assessments.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
Professional Engineer (PE) license in Texas (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
12+ years of progressive transportation design experience focused on roadway and highway projects.
Proficiency in MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, or similar design software.
Strong understanding of AASHTO, state DOT, and local design standards.
Proven ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and deliver high-quality design documents.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience leading large-scale roadway or tollway infrastructure projects including maintenance, widening, and reconstruction projects
Strong client communication and project management skills
Experience with transportation planning, traffic analysis, or utility coordination.
Physical Requirements:
Sitting and working at a computer for extended periods.
Ability to occasionally lift materials up to 20 pounds.
Ability to visit project sites and perform field observations as needed.
Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
Work performed primarily in an office environment with occasional field visits.
Collaborative team setting with interaction across multiple disciplines.
