Summary:
Tetra Tech, Inc. is seeking full-time Staff Geotechnical Engineers to support geo-environmental and traditional geotechnical projects, primarily in our Monroeville and Pittsburgh, PA offices. Typical project opportunities will relate to coal combustion residual (CCR) impoundment closures, mine waste disposal, mine site reclamation, dam structural stability evaluations, soft ground engineering/ground improvement, instrumentation programs, deep foundations, and oil & gas development primarily for private clients in the U.S., but might also include support related to our Federal, State, and Local programs and international projects.
Your Role:
- Perform geotechnical engineering, construction observation, and design assignments under the supervision of experienced engineering personnel. Technical and management responsibilities can increase in complexity with training under close supervision.
- Assigned tasks may include field data collection, construction monitoring, calculations, preliminary design, and drafting for geotechnical engineering evaluations and reports.
- Assist with processing field data, performing geotechnical analyses, report and drawing preparation, and assist in preparation of engineering proposals. Senior engineering professionals will direct and provide peer review of all work.
- Periodic travel, including overnight stays, to project sites to oversee field investigations, construction QA/QC activities, audits, or other activities will be required.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) from a U.S. college or university with an ABET-accredited civil/geotechnical engineering program is required. An advanced technical degree is preferred (e.g., MS or ME).
- For a BS degree, at least five (5) years and for an ME/MS degree at least three (3) years of relevant engineering experience on CCR and/or mine waste disposal facilities (development, expansion, abandonment), energy infrastructure, heavy civil site development, and/or major water resource projects are a plus.
- Experience planning and performing geotechnical investigations, including conventional SPT and CPT-based in-situ testing investigations, evaluating lab testing data, characterizing material properties, performing geotechnical & structural analyses and designs, and providing construction QA/QC. Implementing instrumentation programs and performing geotechnical analyses for dams, soft ground engineering, foundations, and earth retention structures are a plus.
- Active Engineer-In-Training (EIT) status is required, with Professional Engineer (PE) certification a plus.
- Demonstrated educational and relevant work experience showing strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with computerized modeling tools, including the ability to utilize CAD and /or GIS to develop model input is preferred.
- Computer literate; knowledge of MS Word and Excel, and a compliment of analysis and design software relevant to the candidate's primary engineering discipline.
- Must have a valid driver's license in good standing and ready access to a legally registered and insured vehicle or public transportation to meet work commuting needs, with ability to operate 2WD and 4WD vehicles.
- Previous field experience on heavy construction sites and a willingness to travel within the US is required.
- Employee must be capable of field work for geotechnical site investigations which could potentially require the following: exposure to varying weather conditions, wearing PPE, standing, crouching and sitting.
- The employee will regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds; occasionally move 80 pounds or more (such as a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete or soil samples). Reasonable accommodations will be made for persons with disabilities, as defined by the ADA.
- A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
