Job Summary

This position shall function under the Chief Speech Pathologist to provide evaluative, diagnostic, and treatment procedures for pediatric through geriatric patients for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department. This position requires a depth of theoretic and applied knowledge for diagnosing and treating patients with augmentative communication needs, developmental speech and language disorders, acquired cognitive and language disorders, fluency, voice, dysphagia, aphasia, apraxia, and dysarthria. The senior speech position requires advanced knowledge and a minimum of two years of experience treating patients with the disorders listed above. In addition, the senior speech pathologist will have a defined area of specialization (e.g., swallowing disorders, aphasia, pediatric feeding, etc.) and will assume the role of providing ongoing training to staff in addition to providing resources and updates on current research pertinent to the area of specialization. This position functions autonomously, providing teaching and consultation with other departments, physician and therapy specialists within UCDMC, educational specialists as well as other community agencies/service providers. Requires coordination with primary care/service providers and management of insurance authorizations.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • California Licensed Speech Pathologist
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Must possess a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology
  • Holds advanced training certificates, CEUs, degrees, etc., in area of specialization
  • Experience providing direct clinical care to a range of complex patients with competency treating patients in ICU, floor care, rehab, and outpatient settings
  • Advanced knowledge in area of specialization (e.g., swallowing disorders, aphasia, pediatric feeding, etc.)
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate assessment instruments, test administration procedures, scoring, and interpretation.
  • Skills to efficiently review a patient's medical history with the identification of pertinent information to relate to both medical staff, patient, and/or family members
  • Knowledge of how patients should be responding to treatment, average length of stay in treatment, and recognition of appropriate versus inappropriate treatment for each patient
  • Development of programs based on testing results appropriate for each patient
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the need for program modification based on a patient's performance
  • Ability to extract pertinent behaviors and incorporate these into daily written progress notes
  • Knowledge of various home programs and community resources to provide to patients
  • Skills to efficiently report patient diagnosis, skills, and prognosis to referring physician using appropriate terminology and information
  • Extract pertinent information to relate to family members, and be empathetic and supportive
  • Ability to maintain patient records and process necessary billing forms and treatment authorizations in a prompt, accurate manner
  • Ability to maintain accurate schedule and personal workload accounts
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions given by the section chief, including attendance at weekly meetings
  • Advanced knowledge of current therapeutic and evaluative instruments especially as pertains to area of specialty
  • Ability to assume responsibility for other therapists' patients on short notice and communicate effectively with other therapists
  • Skills to provide instruction and supervision, as required, for student interns and medical students

 

Key Responsibilities

  • 70% - Function under the direction and supervision of the Chief Speech Pathologist to perform various evaluative, diagnostic, and procedures for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, acute care, ICU, pediatric, and outpatient 
  • 10% - Maintain accurate and timely patient records and process necessary billing forms
  • 15% - Contribute to the functioning of the Speech Pathology Section
  • 5% - Participates in instructional activities to maintain and improve professional skills and knowledge
