Job Summary


Under the direction of the Service Supervisor and per Federal and state regulations, UCD IACUC approved protocols, the Center's Environmental Enhancement Plan, and industry standards, lead, coordinate, perform, and analyze the full range of behavioral observations and assessments to identify prospective social partners in the indoor colony, prepare for social introductions, execute social introductions, including behavioral data collection and entry, communication with Animal Care, Primate Medicine, Research Services, PIs, as well as ongoing compatibility monitoring. Conduct behavioral observations and assessments on project animals per project aims, care plans, and protocols.

Employing practices to assure animals are well cared for. Identify, treat, and monitor animals exhibiting behavioral indicators of psychological distress. Perform regulatory duties supporting and maintaining socialization, data collection, and documentation per the CNPRC Environmental Enhancement Plan. Population and Behavioral Health Services (PBHS) is responsible for the psychological well-being of nonhuman primates at the CNPRC, which is a critical component of Primate Services to ensure adequate levels of animal welfare and increase the quality, rigor, and reproducibility of scientific data gained from the animals. The ability to exercise good judgment in program compliance and operations management regarding animal behavioral health and behavioral evaluation and monitoring are the greatest responsibility required of this position.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position.
  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Behavior Sciences, or related field. Applied behavioral knowledge of nonhuman primates, with a focus on behavioral assessment, socialization, and enrichment principles and practices. 
  • Experience in conducting, documenting, and evaluating animal introductions for socialization. Experience utilizing formal behavioral observation methods and techniques to monitor, record, and analyze social interactions between nonhuman primates indoors. 
  • Experience in MS Office or related programs to perform data evaluation and analyses.
  • Experience in recognizing changes in animal physical appearance or behavior, which includes assessing the condition of animals and making the appropriate judgment to determine when an animal requires veterinary attention. 
  • Experience in coordinating program activities and providing project support
  • Familiarity and previous use of analytic tools and exposure to new analytic methodologies used by professionals in the study of animal behavior and care management principles in a large biomedical research facility.
  • Applied knowledge of regulations on husbandry of research animals including UC campus policy and procedures, USDA, ILAR, and AAALAC.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in working with nonhuman primates conducting behavioral assessments safely and in a manner that promotes animal welfare.
  • Experience in assessing and analyzing normal and abnormal behavior.
  • Experience in scientific research support and data collection, which includes preparing written summaries and reporting data analyses.
  • Experience managing complex projects, where organizational skills and attention to detail are essential to meet operational goals.
  • Skills to organize, analyze, and report behavioral data.

Physical Demands

  • Substantial contact with animals.
  • Routinely move and lift loaded animal transfer boxes weighing 35 pounds to cages, up to elevations 7 feet high.
  • Lift devices and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Some overhead lifting and reaching to put away devices.
  • Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves, and head covers.
  • Daily work requires standing upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
