Under new leadership, the University of Maryland School of Medicine has expanded its program in aging and population health within the Division of Gerontology of the School's Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH). The division is home to faculty with strong commitment to research at a variety of career stages, who are skilled in transdisciplinary research in aging, epidemiology, population health, and related areas. The division is seeking new leadership in the position of Division Director, who may also be considered for Director the campus-wide Center for Research on Aging; and a leadership role in the Geriatrics Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health is home to strong and innovative research programs in gerontology, cancer epidemiology, genomic and infectious disease epidemiology, translational toxicology, biostatistics and bioinformatics, preventive medicine, and health disparities and population health.

The Division of Gerontology hosts multidisciplinary research projects that span topics such as hip fracture recovery, cognitive functioning, Parkinson's Disease, HIV and aging, women's health, chronic care and disease management, trauma and emergency care, and methods for studying older persons. Collaboration with other faculty in the department, across the School of Medicine and UM Campuses, and the VA is encouraged. Within the division there is ample opportunity to teach, train, and mentor the next generation of scientists (pre- and post-doctoral) across the fields of epidemiology, gerontology, and health care policy, medical students, and students in other professional schools. The division also is home to a National Institute on Aging Training Grant in the Epidemiology of Aging.

The Center for Research on Aging aims to enhance involvement and collaboration among faculty at the University's six professional schools (medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, social work, and law), and expand the conduct of interdisciplinary research and research training in gerontology through collaborations among investigators in aging research in Maryland. The Center is university-wide and has its administrative home in the EPH Division of Gerontology.

In addition, the Center for Research on Aging is administrative home to the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, in partnership with the Department of Medicine's Division of Gerontology , Geriatrics, and Palliative Medicine, and the Geriatrics Research Education and Clinical Center in the adjoining VA Medical Center.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. and/or M.D. (or equivalent doctoral degree) with experience collaborating in an interdisciplinary research setting, background in epidemiology, population health, and/or gerontology or related area. A record of extramural research funding is required of those entering at the professor rank.
