Join Our Team – Lab Manager Position at the UT Larynx Lab

Are you passionate about voice science and eager to make a meaningful contribution to cutting-edge research? The UT Larynx Lab, led by Dr. Adrianna Shembel, is seeking a highly motivated, organized, and detail-oriented Lab Manager to support and coordinate research at the intersection of voice science, speech-motor control, and vocal health.

Based in Richardson, TX (near Dallas), the UT Larynx Lab investigates the neurophysiological and biomechanical mechanisms of voice production. Our interdisciplinary research integrates speech science, cognitive neuroscience, and biomedical engineering to explore vocal fatigue, motor learning, sensorimotor control, and perceptual aspects of vocal effort.
We use state-of-the-art tools, including:

  • High-resolution 3D motion capture to study head, neck, and laryngeal kinematics
  • Acoustic and aerodynamic voice assessment
  • Human subject experimental paradigms involving vocal load and effort
  • Advanced signal processing and machine learning for data analysis

Salary will be dependent on experience and qualifications. This is a grant-funded position, and continued employment is contingent on the availability of funds.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field. A minimum of two years experience with lab equipment and related facilities.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in speech-language pathology, neuroscience, psychology, biomedical engineering
  • Demonstrated experience with human subject research and regulatory requirements
  • Prior experience with IRB protocol development and compliance
  • Familiarity with research involving speech, voice, or motor control
  • Experience managing a team of student researchers
  • Technical aptitude in any of the following: MATLAB, Python, R, signal processing, or biomechanics


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Human Subjects Research Coordination
  • Oversee all aspects of IRB protocol development, submission, and maintenance
  • Manage compliance with federal, university, and HIPAA regulations
  • Maintain detailed regulatory documentation and training records
  • Participant Recruitment & Study Management
  • Design and implement subject recruitment strategies across multiple populations
  • Coordinate screening, enrollment, scheduling, and compensation
  • Supervise and ensure adherence to experimental protocols
  • Research and Lab Operations
  • Set up and troubleshoot motion capture systems and other data collection tools
  • Assist with pilot testing, data collection, and data quality assurance
  • Maintain lab inventory, order supplies, and manage lab safety protocols
  • Train and oversee undergraduate and graduate research assistants
  • Data and Project Management
  • Organize and document study timelines, datasets, and results
  • Support grant preparation and reporting with administrative tasks
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Proficiency with data management tools (e.g., Excel, REDCap, Qualtrics)
  • Comfortable working with technical equipment (e.g., motion capture systems, microphones, physiological sensors)
