Description

The Center for Advanced Pain Studies (CAPS) in the School of Behavioral and Brain Science is seeking an engaged and enthusiastic individual as a research laboratory technician. The individual will be responsible for actively managing transgenic mouse colonies under the supervision of the principal investigators of CAPS. Additionally, they will be responsible for administrative aspects of running a laboratory (i.e., scheduling, record-keeping, etc.) and conducting animal behavioral experiments.

Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills are required for triaging solutions, identifying, and executing troubleshooting efforts, and planning equipment and resource use. Expertise with basic molecular biology techniques and working with mice is highly desirable.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate degree with a minimum of two years hands on experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable. 

Preferred Education and Experience

REQUIRED:

  • Associate degree with a minimum of two years hands on experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable. 

HIGHLY PREFERRED:
  • Candidates with strong background in performing molecular and cellular assays will be preferred (i.e. molecular cloning, Western Immunoblotting, PCR and q-PCR ).
  • Associate degree in life science.
  • Previous research laboratory experience required. 1 or more years of related work experience and/or training. Experience gained in a relevant topic as a student will be considered.
  • Knowledge of transgenic mouse technology and genetics.
  • Intermediate level ability with MS Office and other required software programs.

An interest in independent research projects, including authorship on publications and presentations at national conferences, can be arranged if desired.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Willingness to work with mice and perform mouse genotyping/molecular biology experiments.
  • Provide technical support for the laboratories.
  • Coordinate, delegate, and perform all phases of working with and maintaining the transgenic mouse colony comprised of approximately 30 transgenic lines.
  • Responsible for the documentation and maintenance of lab equipment procedures.
  • Actively oversee technical staff development and training, work closely with admin and staff to resolve issues, and strive to improve the overall efficiency of center operations.
  • Coordinate research projects, including in vivo behavior among several collaborating laboratories within the pain research group and university.
  • Supervise center, including students, interns, and assistants.
  • Serve as quality control monitor for the center: maintain accurate documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to conduct research activities and make decisions according to ethical standards.
  • Knowledge of general laboratory procedures, basic safety precautions, and laboratory equipment.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.


Additional Information

Remote Work: The work will be performed on-site and in person.
Travel: This position may be subject to occasional travel for conferences or for training and/or research needs.
