Description

This position is part of the Fire and Life Safety Department and works collaboratively with campus partners to ensure campus compliance with the NFPA Life Safety Code, NFPA Fire Code, International Building and Fire Codes, and applicable state, local, and federal regulations. This involves developing and implementing programs, procedures, and training that contribute to the success of the organization.

The Safety Specialist II, Fire Inspector, will provide support to departmental staff performing fire prevention, fire & life safety inspections, public education, fire investigations, and other assigned duties.

The ideal candidate will be organized, team-oriented, and exhibit a high level of self-motivation, and interpersonal skills, including establishing and maintaining relationships with fellow employees, state/local/county officials, contractors, and the public. Strong applicants will be able to solve problems and resolve conflicts with minimal supervision and will have a working knowledge of policies and regulations (local, state, and federal) surrounding building code regulations.

The ideal candidate will have a background in fire protection systems. The successful candidate will also excel in areas such as communication, continuous learning, customer-focused service, dependability, flexibility, interpersonal skills, leadership, planning and organization, reasoning and problem-solving, and teamwork.

Minimum Education and Experience

BS in a related field. Three (3) or more years of related experience or a combination of education and experience. Should have the ability to carry 50 lbs. and walk extensively. Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver's License and acceptable driving record.

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, or a related field
  • Possess total years of service found in §449.203. (Head of Prevention)
  • TCFP Fire Investigator
  • TCFP Plans Examiner
  • TCFP Fire and Life Safety Educator
  • Incident Management Training: ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, ICS-400, ICS-700, ICS-800
  • Knowledge of the following: fire and life safety code compliance, building design practices and procedures, fire protection equipment and systems, exiting systems, construction documents, and reports, methods of construction, NFPA standards, building emergency planning and signage, fire protection appliances and systems used in buildings.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair fire alarm systems in compliance with applicable NFPA codes, state regulations, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Conduct system testing and troubleshooting to identify and resolve malfunctions.
  • Complete inspection reports, work orders, and documentation per NFPA and local fire code requirements.
  • Ensure all inspections and services are performed accurately, thoroughly, and on time.
  • Test fire alarm control panels, devices, and system functions on a monthly and annual basis.
  • Replace or install system components such as smoke detectors, strobes, relays, and batteries as needed.
  • Record and report system deficiencies to leadership.
  • Maintain working knowledge of alarm panels, devices, and components.
  • Operate tools and equipment required for inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Communicate effectively with internal/external stakeholders and offsite monitoring companies.
  • Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and best practices.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Assist in managing inventory and maintaining life safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and alarm components; keep accurate records.
  • Support outreach and educational programs promoting fire safety and prevention.
  • Required on call duty rotation.
  • Track system impairments and account for the operational status of all fire systems.
  • Enter system testing data into the fire safety database.
  • Work with vendors for regular inspections of fire extinguishers, alarm systems, and sprinklers.
  • Maintain storage and stock levels of fire system equipment.
  • Coordinate with IT to update and maintain fire safety info on campus maps.
  • Represent the department in campus disaster or hazardous material incidents based on expertise.
  • Exemplify departmental standards in client service, safety, resource use, and continuous improvement.
  • Perform monthly fire extinguisher inspections, replacements, or installations.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance on sprinkler fire systems
  • Service and inspections of wet, dry and pre-action systems
  • Inspects, maintains, repairs, or replaces fire sprinkler equipment and systems in strict accordance with applicable codes and standards
  • Other duties as assigned.
