Department DescriptionThe EMS & Emergency Preparedness Department serves as the connection between pre-hospital emergency medical services, the Emergency Department, hospital leadership, and community response partners. This department is dedicated to improving patient outcomes through EMS quality initiatives while ensuring Wilson Health is prepared to respond effectively to emergencies, disasters, and community-wide events. By combining education, quality improvement, emergency planning, and collaboration, this role helps strengthen patient safety, regulatory compliance, and organizational readiness.
Job SummaryThe EMS & Emergency Preparedness Specialist is responsible for supporting excellence in pre-hospital emergency medical services while leading the hospital's emergency preparedness efforts. This position oversees EMS quality improvement initiatives, coordinates education and training, analyzes patient care data, and develops emergency response plans to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations. The Specialist works closely with EMS agencies, physicians, hospital leadership, staff, and community partners to promote safe, effective patient care and organizational preparedness.

- Lead the EMS Quality Improvement Program through run reviews, case critiques, performance analysis, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Collect, evaluate, and report pre-hospital patient care data while developing action plans based on trends and findings.
- Identify educational needs for EMS providers and coordinate continuing education programs while maintaining training records.
- Ensure compliance with EMS regulations, treatment protocols, annual skills reviews, and protocol updates.
- Represent Wilson Health and Shelby County EMS at GDAHA and SCEMS meetings while communicating important updates to hospital leadership and EMS partners.
- Coordinate Emergency Department clinical experiences for EMS students.
- Serve as the primary liaison between EMS agencies, Emergency Department staff, physicians, and hospital administration.
- Assist Emergency Department staff with patient care as needed, including obtaining vital signs, initiating IVs, assisting with triage, and collecting laboratory specimens.
- Promote community education through injury and illness prevention programs.
- Develop, implement, and maintain the hospital's Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), policies, and emergency preparedness procedures.
- Ensure compliance with FEMA, CMS, ACHC, and other applicable emergency preparedness standards.
- Coordinate all-hazards planning, disaster response, recovery activities, and business continuity initiatives.
- Plan, facilitate, and evaluate emergency preparedness drills, including fire, mass casualty, active shooter, and other emergency response exercises.
- Collaborate with community agencies, first responders, and public health partners to strengthen emergency response coordination.
- Provide education and training for hospital staff on emergency procedures, the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS), and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
- Conduct Hazard Vulnerability Analyses (HVA) and organizational risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential threats.
- Serve as the primary hospital contact for emergency preparedness with local, regional, and state emergency response agencies.
- Maintain emergency communication systems, contact lists, and emergency supply inventories.
- Participate in Safety and Workplace Violence Committees while supporting organization-wide safety initiatives.
- Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility.
- Current EMS certification (Paramedic, or higher) required.
- Associate degree required. Bachelor's degree in Emergency Management, Nursing, Paramedicine, Public Health, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
- EMS Instructor certification preferred.
- Previous teaching or EMS education experience strongly preferred.
- Certifications in Emergency Management, Disaster Preparedness, NIMS, and/or HICS preferred.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and web-based software applications.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data to support quality improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrated organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
