Position Reports To: Family Birth Center Manager

 

Department Description

The Family Birth Center at Wilson Health provides comprehensive, family-centered care to mothers and newborns throughout labor, delivery, and recovery. The team is committed to delivering safe, compassionate, and high-quality care to patients across all life stages, including neonates, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. As a member of the OB team, you play a vital role in supporting patient care, maintaining a safe environment, and ensuring readiness for both routine and emergent situations.

 

Job Summary

The OB Technician functions in the surgical scrub role and provides essential patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse. This position supports labor and delivery, maintains readiness of the OB operating room, assists with newborn care and testing, and performs technical and clerical duties to support the care team. The OB Technician ensures a safe, efficient, and patient-centered environment while maintaining professional standards and supporting positive patient outcomes.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Function in the surgical scrub role for OB procedures
  • Maintain responsibility for stocking, preparing, and ensuring OB OR readiness for use
  • Assist in labor and delivery under the direction of the Registered Nurse
  • Provide physical assistance with patient positioning and toileting needs
  • Prepare vaginal delivery instruments and equipment as requested
  • Decontaminate instruments and transport to Sterile Processing
  • Obtain and document vital signs; report abnormal findings to the RN
  • Perform newborn screenings including PKU, CCHD, transcutaneous bilirubin, and hearing screening as trained and competency-validated
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living across all stages of life
  • Perform clerical duties including answering phones and monitoring secure unit access
  • Support technical duties such as stocking, phlebotomy, and point-of-care testing as trained
  • Maintain open and timely communication with patients, families, and care team members
  • Adhere to professional standards and participate in ongoing competency development
  • Demonstrate respect for patient dignity, individuality, and well-being
  • Assist in meeting the physical and emotional needs of patients under RN direction
  • Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
  • Completion of an approved Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program preferred
  • Three to six months of related hospital experience and/or training preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) completion required
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment
  • Ability to perform essential functions with reasonable accommodations as needed
